I've just replaced my coil pack on my 406. Its fixed my mis-fire problem but I'm just wondering what a coil pack does? The one on my car is a plastic sealed unit with 4 long rubber things that fit down some holes to the spark plugs, so something to do with the ignition. What will I find if I crack open the old one?

It's like a transformer, it converts the low voltage (12v) of your car and gives out a much larger voltage (10,000v?) which go off to the spark plug through leads (the rubber things).

As I've never cracked one open, I couldn't tell you for definite, but something like a big coil of copper wires wrapped around a laminate core. One of these thin wires will have broken, causing the misfire.

Coils
"to the spark plugs
