I looked at a saab 9-5 with view to buy the car when car was running you could smell a breather type smell in the car, like a crank case breather smell, apart from this the car drove and sounded perfect although it has 130,000 miles on, anyone any ideas if it is bad news or not? I know that the 9-5 has a positive crankcase ventalation system but dont know much about it!

Its a vent system designed to allow blowby gasses that pass the rings.Back into inlet manifold to be reburned.Only problem is some dont get the Valve or filter renewed as and when needed. This may be the problem.I dont know the car so cannot comment on replacement intervals. It also prevents or should do water build up in oil.As it gives free air flow

Bit of crankcase pressurisation at 130k would not be unexpected. This is one of the things I always check on a used car. Basically, its wear.

I have vague memories of there being a problem with some saab turbo engines. Can't for the life of me remember the details but try posting on saabcentral or similar. I remember a site that had details of the various design changes done to try and fix it, but I cant remember where - try the tech links section of saabcentral.
fwiw, I ran a saab 9000 2.3t (full turbo not the lpt) to 180K with no problems at all, other than a new oil level sensor.
