Hi,

I've had my IS200 serviced and the cambelt changed. It's got 90K on the clock.

I was thinking of using Slick50 and cataclean.

Has anyne used any additives and did it make any difference?

cheers

You will probably find that most people on this site are against oil additives. If the car has been regularly serviced, there is no need to waste your money, although a dash of petrol injector cleaner (I find Forte best, only available to the trade, but some garages will sell to public) now and again doesn't hurt!

I use an injector cleaner every 10K and I find just soap and water and a soak removes the cat debris from the front spoiler. Regards Peter

I read somewhere that some of the additives have been known since the 1930s, but that they are very corrosive on non-ferrous materials in engines (chlorinated hydrocarbons?). So there is an apparent improvement as the friction is reduced, but long-term problems are likely.
As above, injector cleaner is worthwhile every couple of months.

Unfortunately, in the last week, I've had to remove two recently expired moggies from the middle of the road, to prevent them from further indignity, so take that as a slap on the wrist.

Yes,my cat found out the hard way thet being black and crossing the road on a rainy night was not a good idea, but that was funny. He survived btw.

I think snake oil cures all sorts of illnesses as effectively as engine additives.

My views are as follows :-

Slick50 : Total and utter waste of money especially now that oil quality is so high. This was a product which might just have had a very small benefit back in the 70's when we were using very basic engine oils like Castrol GTX and Duckhams Q 20-50, or indeed before multigrade oils were generally in use, but hell we've moved on in leaps and bounds since then in terms of oil technology.

CataClean : I think this does have a SHORT TERM effect, however as stated previously probably uses some very dubious chemicals to acheive this which probably have long term negative effects. A good thrash or 'Italian Tune Up' is probably all the maintenance your engine needs !

The use of Slick is a complete waste of money. The AA said so too.
