VW Golf Mk2 1.6 Auto choke(1988) - Negger
Hi mileage though in good order, its now using a lot of fuel - having previously been very frugal! I've replaced "O" ring in inlet manifold (completely knackered)and autochoke does now get hot when running. I suspect wax stat and/or Pull down lever!
Any advice on how to determine the more likely ? or indeed any other possibilities ? Any decent sites on setting of auto choke ? Haynes manual not generally very useful!!

From memory on my 1.6 manual MK2 when the waxstat went wrong the hot engine tickover went up to 2000rpm. When the pull down vacume unit broke the strangler plate on top of the carb intake does not move until the electric and hot water circuit takes over (when the engine warm's up). Yor can see externaly if the pull down pushrod is moving without having to touch the carb, you will need a torch,(from the front of the car I think it is the top right hand side of the carb)you can also adjust the stop screw with an allan key.

Your pull down strangler plate unit should move open to it's stop screw position immediately you start from cold. When the engine is hot the choke/strangler plate hot water and electric circuits hold the strangler plate fully open, so the pull down unit should move it's rod but it has no effect on the strangler plate as it is already fully open. I do have the strangler plate gap measurements in my records if you want them, I used a correct sized drill to measure the gap, it is very easy to do and adjust.

Thank you both for your replies - will investigate further on its return from Edinburgh!
I had previously seen postings on this matter, but couldn't find them recently-can't be using the 'Search' option properly - kept getting "No Results found"!!

This is going to sound patronising but you are using the "Forum Search" to the top right as opposed to the Site Search at the top aren't you?
