Anybody know what type of diagnostic tool to use for a 2001 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 16v petrol car? If so, do you know where I can get one? I saw on another Vauxhall forum that a site was quoted as having one for about £30. Trouble is I can't remember the site and don't know if the tool was suitable for 2000> cars.

what makes you think you need one?

i have a vectra, my was running eratically lumpy and i didnt want to take it to vauxhall at ££55 an hour so, i went on the vectra forum
on there, there is a method of putting a paperclip across two of the pins in diag socket, and the eng man light will start to flash a certain amount of times , you can look the flashes up and it will tell you what the fault is, in my case i wondered if it was maf but nothing at all flashed so i put new ht leads on and its been superb ever since.

this may work for yours with a bit of luck.

it saved me a few bob anyhow

good luck

there is a method of putting a paperclip across two of the pins in diag socket,

This only worked on Vectra's built before up until 1999 apparantly. Some cars even earlier.

Look at the 16-pin diagnostic connector on the car. Look at pin 6 of it. If there is a metal terminal connector in the pin 6 position then connect it to vehicle earth with a piece of wire and you can read the flash codes of the MIL light.

If there is no metal tab in the pin 6 position then I'm afraid it will need a proper scan tool. I doubt you could buy one for £30 (if you can then please let me know where from!!).

thanks for the replies. The paperclip method apparently won't work on a 2001 car. I found some diagnostic tools for Vauxhalls and others on ebay but don't know which type that my car uses. There are types like obd/obd2 etc. I have e-mailed Vauxhall asking for help. I won't hold my breath. I imagine the car will become a complete orangey brown colour before I get a reply.

Yours will use OBDII.

You will need either a genuine Vauxhall tech 2,
or an OBDII interface cable, lap top, and OBDII reader software.
The OBDII reader software may not allow you to change things, for this you will need other software.

Thanks dudes. I have found a tool on ebay that costs £28 £2.50 p&p. It states that it works with eobd/obd2 compliant cars which it states is most european cars from 2001 and some before (Volvo etc). It looks simple enough. It may be worth the gamble. If I buy one I will let you guys know if it works. I found the 16 pin connector. It is under the handbrake, behind a plastic cover. I have another 4 years to pay the Zafira up and envisage that dashboard symbol lighting up my life for quite a few of the actual months. It would be good to get ahead of the game and be able to direct the garage rather than take their word for it. I used to fix cars as a hobby but don't have the time now. I hate listening to mechanics explain complete pink fluffy dice to me and can't do anything about it because we really need the cars on the road.
