So we start an election campaign with all three main party leaders saying they are no longer using a well equipped coach to drive between venues. Are they going to use the great integrated public transport system they want to inflict on us? They ought to, but due to pressure of time they are going to use................helicopters. As usual there is one rule for all of us road users and another for those in politics.

Let us start asking our political candidates what they are going to do for us long suffering motorists. We are not a special interest group, but a very large proportion of the voting public - a complete cross section of our society. It spans all age groups and backgrounds. There are many issues that affect us and are in the direct control of the party that will be elected. Let us make our voice be heard.

What questions are you going to ask your potential Member of Parliament on this very important topic. Please make all your replies realistic and true to the real event, so no silly suggestions.

Hopefully, they will be treated like the guy in my thread in "I have a question"....Helicopter trip.

I would suggest that people who comply with your request *are* a special interest group in the the vast majority of drivers do not consider that, for example whether the motorway speed limit ought to be 70 mph, is an election topic worth elevating to the status of, for example the future of public services in this country.

IMHO they're as much as a special interest group as people who will ask their parliamentary candidate what they propose to do about experiments on animals.

No, not that one.

The advantage of the helicopter is that the political leaders do not have to share it with the (gutter)press pack, most of whom just want to catch the politico out at an awkward moment (asleep/changing a shirt etc).

Regarding motoring and without getting too political, all scheduled road improvements should be listed, given an order of importance and implemented strictly in that order - no exceptions. All new requirements go to the back of the list unless so vital that separate funding is found.

Finally, remember to vote!

The advantage of the helicopter is...... ???

This helicopters advantage is that I will be safely tucked away in a bar on Bourbon Street listening to Jazz for the majority of the lie fest that passes as a general election campaign these days.

I will be submitting a postal ballot - luckily I do not live in Birmingham so I will not end up in a Labour constituency.

A helicopter has to be the best way of getting around UK quickly without having to brave our overcrowded roads .

It just makes me wonder who is paying at £500 + per hour?

"It just makes me wonder who is paying at £500 + per hour?"

That was my thought last night when I saw that BBC Newsnight have awarded themselves one (R22 ?) for the duration.

They might even have bought it - it was liveried up in their name.

Actually its a new R44, and I suspect they've only chartered it (as, according to the CAA website its owned by a charter company in Watford)

I noticed that one of the party leaders is being flown about in one of JCB's corporate Sikorsy Helicopters.

I've not locked this thread out of pure curiosity - because I don't see anyway its going to make it back to Motoring.

Thank you Mark for not locking this thread.

I was hoping that there might be suggestions along these lines:

improvements for road maintenance
restoring motorway and bypass building
review of speed cameras
rises in the numbers of Police on our roads
extolling the benefits of car ownership over public transport
changes in taxation and excise duties on cars and fuel
incentives for alternative fuel development
road safety issues
congestion charging - expand or cancel
planning issues relating to parking in new home developments
changes in tests and licenses for drivers
review of crashes for improvements to car design or tightening of the MOT test
higher penalties for driving without a licence or insurance

So lets have your suggestions.

1) Placing speed cameras where they were intended to be. i.e. outside schools with a rigerously enforced 20 mph limit.

2) Removing bus lanes on all main roads i.e. A3 Roehampton.

3) Removing road furniture like speed humps, unless it can be proved there is a speeding problem.

4) Opening up all closed roads so that traffic flows more freely.
