Ford Escort CLX 1992 shifting problem - satgale

My 92 CLX escort has a tough time shifting from 3rd to 2nd. The gears bump and grind. If the RPM?s are under 1K then I can usually manage it.
I have heard it might be the synchros. Any ideas?
Any one heard that using a different tranny fluid viscosity will help?

It sounds more like a clutch problem to me. Can you engage reverse without the gears "crunching"? Is it difficult to engage first from standstill?

Clutch problem would affect all gears..Assumptions may well be correct.ie synchro cones.I doubt changing oil will help.wear is their regardless!

Assuming that the clutch is disengaging OK, then it's almost certainly the synchro gone west. Try waiting a couple of seconds in neutral, this may allow the synchro to 'catch up'. Changing the gearbox oil may well help, but don't be tempeted to use a friction reducer - the synchros rely on friction to work, so if yours is already dodgy, a friction reducer will make it worse. Your best bet if you cannot improve it is 'simply' to learn to double declutch - dip clutch, gear lever to neutral, raise clutch and blip throttle, dip clutch again, engage lower gear. Takes quie a bit of practice (do it on an empty road or carpark!), and is tricky to get right with braking when approaching a downhill junction, but it does work! My sister had to learn to DDC to take her test as the 2nd gear synchro on my Dad's car was getting pretty weak by then.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
