Is it possible to increase ground clearance on a 96 2.8 tdi lwb by rotating the torsion bars a little, and if so how far would they need to be rotated, also does anyone know the largest profile of tyre that would fit the 16"rims,which currently run on 255/65r16 tyres,Basically I am looking to get a couple of extra inches.....?,thanks

In theory you can crank the torsion bars a little, but in practice it's a bit of a bodge. Firstly, you lose the amount of droop you get as this is limited by the wishbones/ball joints. Also, the camber changes quite a lot, and the driveshafts and CV joints all suffer due to the bigger angles. These are always the problems encountered with independent front suspension, which is why the off-road boys stick with proper axles.
You may be able to go up a profile or 2 with the tyres, but you need to be careful as a bigger tyre places more torque on the driveshafts and diffs.
Get yourself a copy of Total Offroad mag and call a few places about a lift kit and tyre sizes. But realistically you are trying to modify something that isn't very 'modifiable'.

Modifying the suspension of any vehicle is not something to be undertaken lightly. You could end up with all sorts of unwanted/dangerous handling problems. Consult an expert on your particular vehicle.
