Looking back at what I've just written, the really sad thing is that 30 years ago we were so proud of buying British.

Believe it or not, the Maxis were very reliable - neither ever let me down. When I thought about a third one, the design faults were all still there. British Leyland lacked the long-term thinking which would have corrected the faults and paid for the investment by increased sales.

I loved my two Standard Ensigns. Both very reliable cars and cheap to buy. Can't think why they were not more popular. Far better than the Ford Consuls. Front bench seats and long, odd shaped, floor mounted gear change.

The 1963 model that I had sheared off one of the fan blades at speed on the M6 near Lancaster. Went into the radiator and damaged it. AA man came out and cut off the opposite blade to get me home. Took me to a garage off the M6 and I bought a tin of Stop Leaks or similar to help stem the leak. Gave me a gallon can of water and I had to keep stopping to top up the radiator. Got home early hours in the morning with my mum almost frantic. No mobile 'phones in those days.

ME

M Escort Mk1 1980 First car, rusty as &&*&, great!!
R Fiat 127 Awful, don't know why I bought it.
V Escort Mk2 Bullet proof mechanics, old age finished it.
B Golf Mk2 Over rated and unreliable
F Orion Another great Ford, reliable as all Ford's are.
P Alfa 155 A typical Alfa, need I say more?
R Escort Mk4 This was almost the worst Ford I owned, dull.
Y Mondeo Mk3 Superb car, possibly the best car I have had.
03 Mondeo Mk4 Impressive spec, but this car has probably ended my lover affair with all things Ford. Far too many niggly bits and pieces. For build faults it is almost on par with my old 155 and I never thought that would be possible with a Ford!

Mrs Etchells

C Talbot Samba Probably has the comfiest seats I have sat in. Typically French, upholstered like an armchair.
N Cinquecento Sporting. Excellent, a road legal go-kart.
R Fiesta Still going strong with numer 1 daughter.
03 MX5 Superb. The best build quality and most trouble free of all the above.

When this thread concludes, it would be interesting if someone with a bit of financial nous could work out how much the backroom has contributed to the motor industry. Not to mention the exchequer. Perhaps if we send the results to Gordon we will all get a rebate>

Since i started learning to drive at 17 years old:

E-reg Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Merit (2001 for 3 months)

1992 Pug 205 1.1 style (2001 to 2003) was giving to me by a relative in Armagh N.I had great memories in it until things were going wrong! The name was SIB

Y-reg Ford Ka Collection (2003 to date) what a great little number from Ford! Her names Peppy!

But have driven many Vauxhall Corsas 1 y-reg 2x 51 reg & an 02reg from bsm.

In 2003 did test drive a Ford Fiesta (E-reg) it was absolutely pink fluffy dice, coudnt get it in to 2nd gear! Test drove a Corsa 1.0 LIFE but i coudnt get the free insurance because i crashed SIB twice at my fault!

So eventually after test driving an X-reg Ka i brought Peppy!

My motoring life started in India as follows:

Hindustan Ambassador (when one had a choice of a antiquated fiat, s Triumph Herald or a Reliant Kitten) - this car was unbreakable

Move to the UK

A Reg VW Scirocco - good car but underpowered
D 249 FEG - Peugeot 309 SRi - ran this for 70000 miles and never missed a beat - by far the most passionate car I have ever owned

It was back to India and then

1993 - brand new Tata Gurkha - sluggish but very comfy on rough indian roads - numerous problems - alternator pumping out 24 volts burning batteries etc, bits fell off after three years, when the steering crossmember fell off, I called it a day

I also had a successions of company 2nd gen Suzuki Alto (maruti 800 over here) - buzzy but nippy little things with appalling brakes. I bought one for SWMBO but I hardly use it

Also had a Maruti Zen (last gen Suzuki Alto) - beleive it or not - all three generations of Alto's are made here and priced at different segments. This was a four cylinder and was pretty good if cramped.

Now have a Honda City Vtec - a toughened version of the Honda City - upgraded the tyres and added a strut brace making it a pure drivers machine without the nannying ABS, ASD etc. choppy ride at the back

Might look at a new Swift or a Getz for swmbo shortly

From 1972 to present roughly in the order SWMBO and I had them; roughly half were company cars some of which I had some say in the choice:

Mini x 2 - learned to drive in one and many fond memories
Kawasaki KH250 - first bike, great fun
Kawazaki Z1 - last bike, v scary
VW Derby - first company car couldn?t wait to get shot of it
Alfasud Sprint Veloce - loved it till it rusted to a premature death
Golf GTI MK2 - definitely the car I enjoyed the most
BMW 323i - put me off the road and off Beemers for life
Audi 100 - awful but served me right for totalling the BM
Granada Scorpio - my first Ford, liked it a lot
Toyota Previa - 4 sons what do you expect!
Mitsubishi Shogun
Mitsubishi Colt
Citroen 2CV x 2 SWMBO loves them
Toyota Camry V6 - yawn
Jag MKII 3.8 - emotional purchase and sale
Citroen AX 1.5D - our first diesel
Citroen ZX TurboD
Mondeo TDi Estate - my 2nd Ford didn?t like it much - too slow
Cavalier 1.7TD - much better than I thought it would be
Peugeot 406 TD Estate - most unreliable car by far
Citroen Saxo VTS - fast and fun
Seat Alhambra TDi - last big car as the sons would soon have their own
Renault Laguna V6 - real Q car and my last company car before the tax rules kicked in
Passat TDi - longest owned, 3 years 85,000 miles, faultless but boring
Mondeo 2.0 Ghia - best value car
Citroen Picasso HDI
Next car ? very likely another Mondeo 2.0 from auction

I passed my test in '95, here's the cars I've owned myself in order since:

1984 Bedford Astravan 1.3 (cost £400 - in hindsight, there was something screwy about this van. The logbook stated it as a 1.6, but it definitely wasn't, I know, I had to replace the engine once. And the fuel tank. And two doors. Etcm, etc etc.)

1989 Volvo 440GLXi cost £2500

1990 Mitsubishi Colt GTi-16v cost £1650

1998 Alfa 145 Cloverleaf cost £5000

1999 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo cost £5200

So that's five cars and 10 years of motoring, for less than any of them (except the van) cost brand new, I think.

Worst: Astra
Least reliable: Astra
Slowest: Astra
Favourite: Still got to be the Alfa, haven't had the Coupe long enough, but I get the feeling she will take the lead.
Fastest: Guess :D
Most reliable: Well, have had no problems with the Coupe yet, but hardly a fair comparison. Had the Alfa for over three years though, and only one breakdown, which was easily fixed, so it wins that one.

In order of ownership Dates are years of manufacture, not when I had them:

Mini 850 - 1970
Escort Mk2 - 1976
Pimlico Kit car (mini 1275gt based) Donor car was 1978 vintage with new bodyshell
Renault 11 GTL - 1985
Peugeot 104 ZS - was to be the girlfriends (now wife) but Charles will remember that little mistake. Rust was redefined with the demise of this car!
Talbot Horizon - 1980 changed engine and box - in the street. It was this excercise that introduced me to the local copper, who I later became good friends with - seriously!
Fiat Regata Estate - 1989 (Like the Strada but worse!)
Morris Oxford Series 6 - 1968
Peugeot 309SRi - 1986 - bought of my dad, he'd had it from new
Citroen Xantia 2.0 16v VSX - 1993
Renault Trafic SWB van -1996
Citroen Xantia 1.8 LX - 1997 - disaster car
Landrover Discovery - 1993, still have it
Nissan Almera - 1999 was my mothers, now the wife's
Nissan Primaster - 2004 replacement for the Renault Trafic above when it chewed its diff up. Still have it.

All in 20 years of motoring.

In addition I bought at least 3 minis when I was in Leicester and broke/sold them for spares. The best deal was one for £15 from an ex lodger, which I then dismantled - in the street!

1985 ? 1986 : N reg VIVA HC 1256 : - bought at 9am, driven into concrete gatepost at 10 a.m. things went downhill from there . nice shade of orange.

1986 ? 1995 : C reg cavalier 1600 ?commander? :- my one and only new car, written off at 135K due to skid on black ice.

1995 ? 1998 : F reg cavalier 1600 estate :- seemed way underpowered after previous saloon, sold to neighbour at 140K miles.

1998 ? 2000 : H reg Carlton 3.0 12v CDX estate :- lovely engine, used no oil at 194K. written off by driving into back of Heineken lorry @ 5 mph. bah!
:-
2000 ? 2003 : P reg Omega 2.5 V6 estate :- felt much slower than Carlton; transferred to SWMBO @ 140K due to high running costs when doing 35K per year. Just chopped in for 1.8 Zafira.

2003 ? now : M reg Omega 2.0 16V CD. :- rattles like a bag of spanners in a dustbin, but seems to keep going. 156K and counting. Consistent 35 mpg which is pretty good for a car this big / heavy IMHO.

Probably missed some out somewhere.
Interestingly, because my employees at the time were ashamed to give me a Marina, they let me spend some money on it and a combination of stiffened suspension, lower profile tyres and some extra sound deadening under the carpets made it a very enjoyable car to drive. I also seem to remeber a different carburettor.
A change of job brought me the Maestro which was the least reliable, but even so in eleven months, I covered over 60k miles.

What I can remember at the moment-

Austin 8.
Austin Cooper (tuned, ate Cooper Ss).
BMW 730.
Fiat Regata turbo-diesel.
Hillman Minx Mk V
Hyundai Sonata
Kia Magentis
Lagonda 3-litre Special.
Mazda R100 rotary.
Mazda RX4 rotary
Proton Gti.
Toyota Celica 1600 GT.
Toyota Celica 2000.
Toyota Crown Coupe.
Toyota Corolla Coupe (AE86 rear drive).
Toyota Celica Supra 2800.
Toyota Supra twin turbo.
Wartburg Knight.

This does not include SWMBO, who had an Imp, two Vivas, a Cortina and then, with great relief, a long series of Toyotas starting with the first Carina and including three Celicas, a MKI MR2 and a Supra (hers were all new!). She had a lot of trouble with the first four and none thereafter. She has not been able to drive for the last 10 years and still does not like it.

Most frustrating - Saab 900 Turbo - blistering performance, but dreadful gearbox and bone-jarring ride.

Worst build and drive - Triumph Dolomite.

Various transits, sprinters, LDV minibuses and 7.5 tonners from various hire places, as well as numerous hire cars, all reasonably unmemorable, with the exception of a 4.something Cadillac de Ville in california in February which was very quick and nearly as thirsty as the Jag.
