Watched a Lorry today attempting a 3 point turn in the road in, well let's say not exactly in the most safe of places. Now on the rear of said lorry was one of those *how's my driving?* stickers with the 0800 freefone number. Should have wrote his plate down and rang number to say 'well matey your driving was terrible!' But I didn't reason being couldn't be bothered.
My Q is has anyone in backroom actually phoned one of these numbers? And what was the outcome?

Reminded of the Jasper C. sketch where the 0800 number connects to the driver of the offending truck...

Ok this post is going to give Mark lots of ammo to throw at me i'm sure, but here goes anyway.
I have (past tense) worked as a transport manager for a large comapany that has those stickers. Now every call that came into us was logged at head office then passed down to the relevent transport manager to deal with, I would normally call the person who logged the compalaint to get the full story then interview the driver concerned, If it was necessary the driver would get a training session, or would certainly be one of the first on the next round of assesments. Most do take those sort of complaints very seriously, you will always get the odd stupid one, and somtimes it was an ideal oppertunity to educate the person on the other end of the phone.
I have and still do use these numbers to both complain and also to congratulate, they can be used for both, my only suggestion would be to keep it constructive.

I did once call one of these numbers after seeing a small truck being driven *really* dangerously. 60+mph in a 30 limit and nearly collided with two cars in the space of mile. I had reg. no. location, exact time etc.
Someone took all the details, but I never heard any more about it.

Yes, I've called to say the driver is driving like a pro, nothing dangerous going on at all. The operator didn't know how to take it - must be used to people mouthing off at her.

Didnt someone once make a business out of selling these. It had a twist tho, phone the (premium) number and you got a recorded mouthfull of humorous abuse!

IMHO they are a good idea as i have said. I have no problem with driving a truck with the number on. On one occasion when I was driving without a sticker on and a driver was giving me grief I actually got out and called the transport manager from my own phone and handed to him so that he could report me, I knew I had done nothing wrong so had nowt to worry about.

While on the M27, my passenger wife called a trucking company to say the driving was fine but the truck appeared to have a problem with a rear tyre.
It turned out to be the owners wife on the phone and her son driving the truck.
She first questioned if I had the correct details as she was not aware the truck was in use. Reassured that we were driving alongside so we could read the telephone no she was a bit taken aback to get the call.
She did call back a few minutes later to tell us the driver had been informed and was full of thanks.
It was content that it was the best I could do, before I left him to sort it out and sped up.
It would not have been possible without me having a passenger as there was no phone no on the rear of the truck.
