Hi all,
2 days ago a warning light came on on my 1991 Volvo 940 GLE's dash board.
It'a an explanation mark !
Never been on before.
Looked in Haynes - does not say what it is.
I have the Volvo 940 owners' manual somwehere but i cannot find it.
trid the Volvo Owners club - but you have to join {pay!!!!!!} to get any help.
Also seen a 'chip' for £4.95 that claims to boost power by 20BHP - a piggy back device ''externally alters one or more signals sent to the Volvo 940 ECU''
Can it be any good for a fiver ??????????
Many thanks

Let me guess - this chip has variable power controlled by a knob that wouldn't look out of place on your cooker.
Useless in other words and a waste of money. What colour is the light? Red? Orange? Is it just an exclamation mark or an exclamation mark with something else on?

I've done a bit of hunting and the best I can come up with something to do the brakes. The general consensus is brake fluid but I must warn you, I've been wrong twice in less than a week!
Is this the third time?

Hi, the light is red.
A red explanation mark , !, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {but red}
in the centre of the row of warning lights.
I've just read the other posts too.
I'll go & check on the brake fluid resesvoir
I have another 940.
I'll take out the brake fluid sensor and see what happens.
I thought that the 'chip' at £5.00, would be useless.
Many thanks all

The explanation mark symbol on a Vauxhall is an indicator that the brake fluid is low.
As for the device that boosts power by 20 BHP, read the comments posted to the following thread, and then decide whether it's worth a fiver or not:-

An exclamation mark in parentheses (I think they're meant to represent the brake shoes) generally means the handbrake is on...
|
Which doubles as a brake fault light.
On my Fiesta it kept flickering - I assumed the handbrake was dodgy but the brake fluid was low.

I think you might mean "Exclamation mark"
An explanation Mark is when RBLS tells us why he has deleted something not motoring-related.
Suprised DD repeated it.
He'll probably delete this now.

GrahamF1 is right - it's a low brake fluid warning light. I have just checked in my Volvo handbook.

Shirley some mistake. I thought it was Adski and myself that suggested that?
Anyway, pedantic comments aside, at least it's been established what the 'exclaimation mark' light is for.

Hi Cliff and others,
yes it is the brake fluid light.
Level was at max, so I plugged and unplugged the sensor - light gone off now - just a dirty connection !!!!!!!!!!!
However I disconnected the sensor on my other 940, but the warning light did not come on at all !!!! {no pun intended - in the use of an explanation mark that is !!}.
Prob solved - thanks again.
Cliff - have you ever owned a 960?
I'm looking out for a good one, as they are so cheap {or inexpensive, that is} plus I dont do that many miles.
Fancy a 960 / V90 204 BHP - or even an 850 / V70 T5 / TR-R,
but the latter a bit dearer and all Volvos {except 700 / 900 / V90 etc } are front wheel drive - - - poor turning circle, wheel spin, tyre wear - plus these are not as good at pulling the 5 berth caravan?
Any thoughts?

Glad you managed to fix it!
Level was at max, so I plugged and unplugged the sensor - light gone off now - just a dirty connection !!!!!!!!!!!
It may be worth giving it a little squirt with electrical contact cleaner or squeezing the connector to give it a tighter fit if possible. I eventually figured out I could do this on my Escort having fought with just about every metal cleaning chemical in the book!
However I disconnected the sensor on my other 940, but the warning light did not come on at all !!!! {no pun intended - in the use of an explanation mark that is !!}.
Yes, I really don't know why manufacturers design the circuit so if the wire falls off you don't know that you haven't got brakes!
Adski this was probably your problem also (dodgy connector).

In my defence I didn't give it a second thought. I just copied/pasted the previous spelling of it to save having to think about how it was spelt.

oh - all agreed on the £5.00 chip then?
Has anyone 'chipped' an engine with worthwhile results?

Yes but not with a 5 quid "chip"!

This 'chip' probably tricks the ECU into thinking the air is more dense and hence delivers a richer mixture, giving you more power while over-fuelling and steadily killing the catalyst. Do not touch with barge pole.

Come on - be sensible, what do you think you are going to get for £4.95? certainly not 20HP
|
No, never owned a 960. I've been in one - pretty impressive performance.
The engine isn't a real Volvo one, and doesn't have the same reputation for mega-mileages. In fact rather a reputation for camshaft bearing trouble because of inadequate lubrication.
But pretty good all the same if well looked after.
|
I think the car you are thinking of is the 760, with the PRV V6 engine? I thought the 960 used an all Volvo straight 6. Very very smooth and much underrated, if a bit thirsty. Same basic design is used transversly in the S80.
|
Yes, I think you are right Ross. I'd forgotten Volvo went back to straight sixes again.
