Rover 214...something - stopped working - Adam {P}
Hello and welcome to what is quite possibly the most vague description ever.

My mate has a K reg Rover 214 something. I thought it was an SLi but now I don't think it is. It has something fancy after the 214 anyway, it's K reg and 3 doors.

He was driving it the other day and it just stopped on the motorway and wouldn't start again. He's been told it could be the fuel filter or the ECU - both pretty much writing off the car as it's done very hogh mileages and both components would cost more than the car.

I was wondering if the BR had any other suggestions as to what the problem could be. I haven't seen the car since it broke down and my mate's left it at another mate's so can't try anything you might suggest. All I know is that there's a spark and obviously it's turning over.

Many thanks but it's understandable if you can't help working off the limited information I've given you!

Cheers,

Well if it's got a spark you're half way there. It could be it's not sparking at the correct time but think you'd get some misfiring/backfire if that was the case.
Most likely not getting any fuel through.
He will need to check if any fuel pressure if an injection engine or flow of fuel to the carb.
Hope that will do for starters, sorry about the pun.

Thanks Dieselnut. No idea if it's injected or a carb so I'll ask him after.

I knew some bright spark would be on to help - sorry about the pun

Crank position sensor is common on these. If it fails no spark. And often give no warning of failure. But get someone to check for a spark. Also fuel supply..When was it last serviced?

Hi,

My 214 used to need a new distributor cap every two years or so. The central graphite contact would fail. These are literally ten a penny, but as you can't buy them for love or money you will have to fork out £12 or so for the whole cap.

Pre-failure symptom was a slight misfire/hesitation under acceleration, and great reluctance to start.

Rgds.

Fuel pump relay is another possibility - that stopped a friend's metro in a similar manner. Not too expensive.

Many thanks Steve, Rover Boy and John. I've fowarded all your suggestions onto him. Hopefully one of those will be at fault. (Much, MUCH cheaper!)

Adam, My BIL had a Rover similar to your Rover something some years ago and he had a similar fault. They pulled it half to pieces before they found it was a fuel shut off valve which is fitted so that in the event of an accident it closes off the fuel supply to the engine.
He hadn?t been in an accident but apparently they can close during hard braking.
All it required was re-setting.
Long shot but worth having a look.

He's ruled out the dizzy cap and it going to check the fuel pump relay and shut off switch.

Anyone know where the switch is please?

Cheers

Hi,
It's behind the front console (ware the radio etc is) on the drivers side, normally next to the floor air vet on Rover's.

James.

UPDATE.

He's got it working 0 it was the fuel cut off switch!

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who posted. And on behalf of my mate, thanks as well. He was going to buy a new ECU and fuel filter so if it hadn't been for the BackRoom, he would have been knackered!

Many thanks again Gents,

Just out of interest - does anybody know where the fuel cut-off switch is on a 1997 Rover 100 (metro)? Thanks.

As James said, on my mate's it was by the centre console. I'd give that a go.
