I've been running my Mondeo for nearly a year now covering some 20k miles.
On odd occasions during acceleration the turbo becomes what might be described as 'lumpy'. It feels like the effect of a 'kick-down' on an automatic and the engine gives out a throaty noise, it will then clear itself to give a smooth acceleration and then go through the same motions again until changing up a gear. This doesn't happen if the acceleration is gentle, only when on a loaded hill climb or high acceleration during overtaking etc. I've been told that this could be turbo surge, if so is there anything that can be done about it?

I bought a Mondeo 115 TDDI when it first came out and within a few days of having the car noticed that the engine surged when cruising. The car was in and out of the Ford dealer and I was constantly told that the car was fine. After about 3 months Ford finaly admitted there was a known fault and it affected all 115 Duratorq diesels and at that time Oct/Nov 2001 there was no fix. I finaly had enough of the car after owning it for 9 months and sold it, the week before I sold it Ford had a software update for the engine management system which cured the fault.
It may be a good idea if you haven't already done so to check at a Ford Dealer that the software for the engine management system is up to date.
