Colleague at work has a 51 plate A class. She said it broke down at the weekend (initial diagnosis alternator, later revised to battery, which was replaced). Today she managed to lower 3 of the windows which then would not go back up again. We managed to lift the windows (hand on either side of the glass and depressing the up switch) and get them to stay up: is there some sort of re-set process that should have been followed after installation of new battery? I did suggest she RTFM as well, but she's not very technical....

Yes,on most cars now if the battery is disconnected the electric windows forget their memory. It is a simple process of winding each window to the up & down limit so that the system "re-learns".On these Mercs you need to rock the window lift switch half way to up (window totally closed)& then halfway to down (window fully open).Sounds complicated but easy in practice.

Thanks. i) I'll see if she's read the manual tonight, and, if not ii) I'll try to get her to try that.

Most mercs will set with the global closure feature.
Lock car with remote
Unlock car with remote, but keep button pressed until all the windows have wound fully down.
Lock car with remote, but keep buttomn pressed until all the windows are fully closed.
Job jobbed.

That sounds simpler. Problem is, she's off on holiday on Sunday. Methinks she'll just leave the windows up 'til then, and sort it when she comes back. If I could get my mitts on her car handbook, I'd read the thing for her....

Can you not phone her and narrate AR-CoolC's info to her?

I emailed it to her... ! she has little confidence. I have to say, tho', in her shoes, I'd probably also wait until I came back from holiday. If it doesn't work, and you end up with all 4 windows at the bottom of their travel and a plane to catch, it could be inconvenient!
