Will todays new red cars still fade as badly as ten year old ones or has technology improved colour fastness of red pigments?
|
I had a solid, non-metalic, red 1991 Citroen BX from 1994 to 2003, the only time the paint looked faded was about 3 months after I used a colour coded polish. It was rubbish. Cleaning it off brought the colour back to normal. I saw the car about 4 weeks ago, age 13 and it still looked ok. My daughter's Corsa, 1994 vintage, however, looks quite chalky in places.
Hard to tell, isn't it?
|
I could be wrong about this, but didn't legislation change a few years back meaning that manufacturers had to use water based paints instead of oil based? If so, we may find new cars being worse rather than better.
|
I remarked on this fact to A bodyshop owner, he told me that ammonia in polishes and famous-brand cutting compunds destroys the red pigment of many red paints.

Yep, something like that. IIRC, it's to cut down on the solvents being released into the atmosphere as it's not ozone friendly, but they then go and spray a solvent based lacquer on top of water based metallic paints - LOL. Bonkers or what?
|
Does anybody know how long fords metalic 'pepper red' will last before i consider these aftermarket polishes?

i kept my red golf gti waxed every month,,and it never faded....
the latest owner of it still has a very shiny red e reg golf gti :)

|
Does it have Sudan 1 in it?

I am not certain about this, I dont think you are supposed to use polish on metallic colours because it destroys the top lacquer coat. I am sure that if I am wrong someone will correct me.

It is in the right place. Change how you view the thread to "view threaded" and you'll see.

The solid red on new Fiats is charged as extra. Salesman tells me it is because they put on several more coats of paint than for other solid colours. Let's see if this colour fades in the same way.

Our red VW Golf Mark 3 is just over 10 years old and there's no sign of faded paint. However, our Haynes manual for said car HAS faded on its spine to pale pink!

Our family had a red Renault 19 and it needed T-cutting every year or two. Came up brilliantly and looked fab but this was the reason I have just ordered a car with Metallic rather than solid colour. 'T-Cutter's Finger' is an afliction I will leave to younger souls!!!!

frostbite, just dont get licking the paintwork. and you should be ok !!!!!!!!!!

The red paint on my 1964 Triumph 2000 hasn't faded yet. Is this going to be a problem when it ages?
|
No, Rust and red are the same colour.
|
we've got a 1998 red ford escort(non metallic) and there are patches all over the bonnet that have gone pink. It is kept outside all the time though.

Ooooh, a fellow Triumph owner!
Any tips on tuning twin SU carbs?

Volvo 240 DL in dark red - faded badly but responded well to a good polish.

SWMBO red 1994 Corolla faded badly. I T-cutted it before sale but it could have done with another session to make it look better.Still - it sold at the asking price.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

Most of the of the faded pinkos you see on the roads are Vauxhalls. Am I right? Also Toyota got round the problem a few years ago by doing a pinky red shade.

Our 1987 golf suffered from this, used to see quite a lot of VW about the same age with the same sort of problems.
Turtle Wax colour specific polish sorted it out in recent years for ours.
|
If faded paint doesn't bother you, leave it, as too much T-cutting is probably worse in the long run.

My neighbours red g-reg VW Golf was red & it faded on 1 side quite badly. She told me she wnt 2 a VW main dealer & asked a bloke in the body shop wot wud b the best thing 2 do 2 restore the original colour, she was told that nothing can b done about because it looked as though it had been resprayed in the past in the incorrect way & has ruined the coat!

My aunt bought a brand new Polo Coupe in the mid to late 80s and she was very impressed with the deep red paint, she loved it.
But upon its first service, the technician at VW said the colour just wasn't quite right. So they sent for a VW paint specialist, who agreed it wasn't perfect and so sent the car to be entirely re-sprayed!
That wouldn't happen nowadays!

Mine has Strombergs, but I imagine the same principles apply.
1) Everything else must be tip-top first - electrics, timing, compressions, etc
2)Carbs themselves must be OK - ie jets not worn, centralised, pistons falling freely, choke cutting off properly, float chamber inlet valves working and adjusted.
3) Set mixture individually, using the method of lifting the piston a fraction with a thin screwdriver. If engine speed rises, = too rich. If it falls, = too weak. If it stays constant, or rises a bit and then falls, = spot on.
4) Set idling speed stop individually until there is the same hiss, or degree of suck on each carburettor.I use a simple gadget with a bit of pipe and a pea in a glass tube.
5) Recheck mixtures, adjust idling settings equally to give desired idle speed. Then re-connect linkage. Check that each throttle leaves its stop at precisely the same moment.
6) Check the plug condition after a few miles - ie sooty, bleached, or chocolate brown, and adust the mixture screw on the appropriate cylinders ie 1,2,3 or 4,5,6.
That's a bit compressed and written in haste, but I hope you get the idea. It's the order of doing things that's important, I think.
Good luck

The only thing I would add is make sure that the damper oil in the dashpots at the correct level, and is the same viscosity. I used to use 3 in 1. Again, from memory, the Stromburg mixture was adjusted by a screw at the base of the jet, and the SU by a nutunder the body.

How do elderly or indeed newer Ferrari's cope with the fading issue?
|
They are probably kept in a heated garage for 11 months of the year!
|
|
|
Yup. Get some neoprene tube, stick it in your ear and when the hissing sounds about equal on each you've got it.
Degree in astro-physics not required.

I used to have a Ford Sierra, 1985, and by the time I got rid in 1993, for another Sierra (no imagination in my youth!) the roof was almost entirely pink. The rest of the car was however, shiny red.
Must have been because the roof was closer to the sun !!.
