Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - audi80tdi
Hi all,
Currently driving an Audi 80 TDi M reg 93000 miles on clock. I know these car can run to mega miles. Was wondering what mileages you people out there had got on their diesel cars?
Also did servicing costs rise considerable after reaching a certain mileage?
How often did you service your cars?
Any other tips on increasing the life of an engine???

Cheers

I recently had a 2001/51 Mondeo TDi Est with 131k.
In terms of age relative to mileage you can't beat a 398k Citroen C5 diesel going through Measham this Friday. Its <3 years old. Must be an ex taxi.

I was a passenger in an Merc E taxi in the Canaries in January and it had over 800,000 km and was 5 years old.

Can I claim the lowest high milage diesel car?

Golf GT TDI (130) 3yrs old with only 103,500 on the clock. Serviced (main dealer for first 90K) every 10K by a local independent specialist. Only costs that weren't my fault (!!) were for 4 new tyres, new set of pads and a new turbo pipe.

I picked up my Picasso HDi from its 25,000 service yesterday and the garage told me about a C15 van they service every 12k that has 500K on it.

The Xantia had just passed 166k when we traded it in for a 530d.

Both petrols but I have driven a 397k SAAB 9000 and a 437k Mercedes 190E. The SAAB had a knackered seat but was fine. The MB could have had a 350k haircut and no one wold have known.

My record was 117k in 30 months in a Volvo 240GLT but I was much younger then.

I have owned 2 Bxs, one with 170k and another with 150k when I sold them to friends (who remained friends!!) 170k one was sold on with over 200k on it.
Here's a quote from another board some time ago
"I drive a BX diesel which I use as a taxi. It's my 5th. BX 19 diesel & all gave me the greatest satisfaction in both reliability & economy. I still have my 1987 BX which I cannibalise for spares, not that I need many. It was retired for 'scrap' after a crash @ 350,000 miles. It's replacement was sold off for less than the value of its parts @ 450,000 miles; one has been retired to my driveway @ 740,000miles & my current workhorse is now @ 380,000 miles. I've never changed a wheel-bearing, only one gearbox and a few suspension bits; one major engine overhaul; two head-jobs but never a tow-home failure [unless you count the one time I let the cam-belt snap!]."

Work pool car is a 1999 Mercedes E300 turbo diesel with 360k on it. It's just has a new auto box though and is starting to rust, so probably won't see 400k with us (in about six to eight months if it does). The interior is still solid and the paint relatively unchipped and certainly shiny.

My own car is a 1996 406 1.9 which is about to pass 110k with very few problems - door mirror control broken, dodgy rev counter, occasionally sticky central locking on one door, missing door trim, a couple of parking dings and very minor rust on one door bottom - the rust is no worse than the Merc though. All my car really needs is a weekend of fettling or reconditioning, rather than any real work as it still drives properly and looks great from a distance.

Skoda Octavia TDi W reg, 110,000 miles. Serviced every 20,000 miles with an oil change every 10,000. Considering changing the oil a bit more frequently now. Due a cambelt change at 120,000, but may do at next service.

It's suffering the usual TDI ailment as reported on this forum, the flatspot (improved thanks to a new air filter), and is starting to need small things e.g. new pollen filter.

Servicing costs less because i go to an independant rather than Skoda main dealer (out of warranty)

My 1995 Cit ZX td Estate now has 207,000 miles on the clock. It gets an oil change evry 6k (Halfords semi-synthetic diesel)and has had a cambelt change every 50k. Things have gone wrong - belt tensioner, recon steering rack 2k ago, one clutch, two radiators, one head gasket, anti-roll bar links, front shocks, brake discs etc but replacing this is cheaper than depreciation on a newer vehicle. I trust it sufficiently such that our family of four has just used it to drive to Austria and back on a skiing holiday. 2000 miles in nasty winter conditions, and it never missed a beat.
I'll replace it when something major breaks, but that could be for a good while yet.

1997 VW Passat TDi - 156,000 on the clock. As with the Octavia above, just minor stuff going wrong, apart from the replacement of most of the front suspension.

Still smooth most of the time, but I think the MAF might be on the way out....

Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - andymc {P}
If the MAF is giving you trouble DB, try cleaning it with some brake-cleaning fluid before you pay for a replacement - I did mine the other day and the car is back to top form, zippy engine and mid-fifties economy. If that doesn't sort it out, the MAF exchange scheme should mean you only have to pay somewhere between £50-£60.

These messages made me laugh. I work for a very large firm, and this week I have taken off the road two vans as unroadworthy. They are LDV diesels, with mileages around 80,000.
I was also involved with a third one, with 90,000 miles on it, which drinks about as much oil as diesel fuel, and simply refused to start this morning in cold weather.
My own diesel, a Mondeo, is quiet and refined in comparison, and although only just over a year old, does very well.

My uncle used to do airport runs (Heathrow & Gatwick) in a Seat Alamrba TDi (90) which he owned for about 5 years, in that space of time he reached 250k miles before he traded it in! I believe it was surviced in according to the book, but before he let it go the turbo became very tired & didnt take off like it used 2!

Hi

Currently have a 1999 Rover 75 diesel, 205,000 miles without any major problems. Oil and filter is changed and always has been changed at 5,000 intervals since new as well as the 15K service (either lubrication or inspection). Am still getting nearly 50 to the gallon and still has original everything except radiator and clutch.

The guy that owned the car before me never used full throttle/revs until the engine was fully warm and ran the turbo down at the end of a journey. I have kept to his way of doing things and intend to keep the car for at least another 100K before I upgrade to an MG ZT version!!!

Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - Sprice
There was a Passat TDI on the autotrader website recently that had over 300k on it. It was a year 2000, 110 model, IIRC.

I thought the engines in LDV vans were either Peugeot units or ford units with acompanied gearboxes. I have no direct experience with either engine but thought they would be capable of at least double that mileage. I remember the old Leyland Daf 200 and 400 series vans that had Perkins engines the same as the Montego - durable but liked to drink oil!!!! How regularly are they serviced??
Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - DSLRed
2001 Y Reg Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI - 128,500 miles in 3 years 4 months, regularly serviced every 10k miles, with the last one a biggie with the cam belt change.

Only other costs have been for new tyres.

Never had a problem. Currently looking at changing though, just because it's time for a change.

only hope the next one is as good.

Not a diesel, but I have a T reg Xantia 2L 16v auto, done 169K used mainly for motoway trips, but just keeps going with absolute minimum spend - just a (cheap) service once a year but has had new rear suspension spheres 2 years ago & new ABS sensor last year.
Not bad for a car clocking up about 20K a year (& I DIDN'T bother changing cambelt last time it was due) My attitude is it doesn't owe me, so if it finally stops, I'll scrap it, but it sails through MOT each year!!!!
Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - Bagpuss
You can get lots of miles from petrol engined cars as well. In Switzerland, where most taxis have petrol engines, I took a ride in an immaculate Mercedes W126 (80s S-Class) with 1.2 million km on the clock. It was a 6 cylinder 2.6litre petrol version and was without doubt the most immaculate 20 year old taxi I have ever seen.

I went on a jolly with work to Germany (Shell) once and it's not unusal for Taxi's - Passats and E Class Mercs to have done well over 500K. I once read in Commercial Motor of MB buying back a MB Spinter van that had clocked up 450K in just over two years it was used to carry bullion between banks all over Germany and MB wanted to see what wear had occured.

As bagpuss says - you can get very high mileage from all cars whether they be diesel or petrol.
I know this has been shown before but loads of examples of petrol Volvo's & Honda's doing 200K-300K with basic service and the odd wear and tear item.
I'm sure all makes would have similar - although strangely enough I could not find a site for VAG cars (which was the OP)

I drive a Volvo S40 1.9TD, its covered 125k so far and it still seems to be in pretty good health. I purchased it with 113k on the clock and in last 3/4 months I've covered over 10k, the only thing which has gone wrong so far was the water pump!

Just over 280k on a D reg Jetta. It was my neighbour's. He never had the engine serviced from 210k! He just wanted to get rid of it but didn't want to justify getting a new car until the old Jetta gave up the ghost. He'd get furious every time it sailed through it's MOT.

A couple of months ago, I mentioned on one of the posts that I'd recently seen an 02 plate Merc E220 CDI that had done a staggering 426000 miles, apparently still on the original engine, gear box & turbo. Only bit of interior wear was a slightly saggy drivers seat.

The 1.2 million mile Volvo makes me laugh...

I've only had 2 Volvo's, and both were appalling. 2001 (X) V40 Petrol, which had terrible reliability at just 40k and a 2006 S40 diesel which was parted with (actually, it was successfully rejected) at <6,000 miles because it broke down eight (yes, 8!) times. The inspection report said something along the lines of "This vehicle (engine) has fundemental flaws in it's mechanical design.... and is not fit for purpose"

How any Volvo has reached 1.2 million miles is beyond me.
Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - Avant
I think you'll find that the Volvos that last for 000,000s of miles are the ones made in Sweden, rather than Holland (also Belgium?) where the S and V 40ds are descendants of the DAF.
Highest Mileage Diesel car??? - DP
I've been in two starship mileage taxis on the Continent recently. The first was a Mercedes E270CDi in Belgium with 475,000 km (295,000 miles) on the clock, and the second was a VW Passat TDi with 425,000 km (265,000 miles) on the clock.

The Passat was very tired, but the Merc was still quick (Belgian cabbies are maniacs!), smooth, quiet and rattle free.

A good advert for the much maligned durability of common rail diesels, and recent Mercedes.

Cheers

Er, no!

The first S/V 40s were co-designed with Mitusbishi (Carisma - Volvo definitely pulled the long straw there!) albeit built in Holland (Nedcar).
The current S40/V50s (and C70s) are of course closely related to current Focuses and are built in Genk, Belgium.

Not sure how the next S40/V50 will work if Ford dump (sorry, sell) Volvo.

I am surprised at the poor assessment of the 2006 S40 engine. It is after all a Ford engine used in millions of other cars, presumably without these troubles.

Agreed, it is a 1.6 or 2.0 Ford/PSA unit with a good reputation, class leading refinement and is used in various Pugs, Citroens, Minis, Fords and Mazdas as well as Volvos.

Whoopwhoop, Have to agree with you about Volvos! I owned one years ago and it was probably the most unreliable car I have ever owned. The bodywork was good though! The whole experience was made worse by the dealership which employed staff who were both ignorant and arrogant. Two cars I have owned that were reliable at high mileage (~200k) were an Austin Cambridge (nearly twenty years old then) and a pre-electronics Carlton.

My 1994 Peugeot 306 1.9TD is still going strong at nearly 202,000 miles, still drives exceptionally well with no abnormal noises, other than a slight rattling dash which it had when I bought it 4 years or so ago. Even all the ancillaries work, with the exception of the key fob which died years ago and I couldn't be bothered to get it fixed. I do approximately 500 miles per week for work purposes and social/leisure trips and it doesn't miss a beat.

Went in an S reg Mondeo 1.8TD which my local taxi firm uses a few weeks ago- that had 235k on it and it seemed just as good as my 306.

My mate's H reg Discovery has 215k on it and engine seems as sweet as a nut and all ancillaries work, even the air con.

These engines are bombproof. My brother in law had a 405 TD with 200k on it that still drove beautifully, and our local cab firm used to use 406 TDs all of which had 200-300k on and were on original mechanicals.

Mine's still going strong at 132k. Uses about half a litre of oil between 10,000 mile changes, although it's running a bit warmer than it used to in traffic or under hard acceleration recently. Other than that, it's faultless mechanically and still gives me 45-50 mpg.

They're nice to work on, these old diesels too. You set them up with spanners, pins and dial gauges rather than a laptop. Proper mechanical engineering.

Funny you should say that, because my 306 has been running warmer of late in traffic or hard accelleration on a long uphill climb, especially in warm weather (not that we've had much summer!). However the radiator is past its best and leaking slightly so obviously it isn't cooling as well as it used to. But it still drives like a dream and have been getting 550-600 miles to the tank on some long runs of late.

That's why I'm somewhat reluctant to get rid of it until something major goes wrong, whereby the value of repairs matches or outweighs the value of the car.
