I have a vauxhall astra 1.6 (8 valve version), 2001. I am currently using a ordinary oil, and wondered whether I should be using the synthetic or semi-synthetic. With using the ordinary oil am I damaging the engine? I do however change this every 6,000 miles.
I have seen a discussion thread on the site but cannot find it. Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks

There is an oil thread at the very top of "Technical Matters.'
Refer to your handbook for the correct oil spec.
If you don't have a manual, they can be downloaded at...
vauxhall.co.uk/ownership/indexHub.jhtml
Also, they have oil charts at...
vauxhall.co.uk/ownership/servicing/engineOils.jhtml
Buy tradeclub offer of 4 x 5 litres of the oil you require from the parts desk of your dealer, as it will be half the price or less of anywhere else, including cash and carries etc....

A minimum of semi synthetic is recommended for this engine, meeting ACEA A3, B3 specification. Cold viscosity 0 to 10W, minimum hot viscosity 30. This is all in the handbook. Your vx dealer can no doubt provide just what you need at a very reasonable price.

You shouldn't be damaging your engine however the minumum of a 10w-40 semi-synthetic would be a better choice.
