Why have the bikes standing up? Can't you lay them flat, so a conventional estate or hatch would serve. I can lay my spotrs bike flat in my wife's Celica.

Easy! 156 Sportwagon. With the front wheels popped out, I can get two mountain bikes in mine, upright. Just pop the seat cushion forward ~the bit you sit on, not the back ~ and your bikes will sit upright across the width of the car, leaving your boot free for other *stuff*

I like the idea of that, would sit nicely next to my 156.
SWMBO however does not like big cars, hence trying to get into a small high car.

The ones that spring to mind include Citreon Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Renault Kangoo, Fiat Doblo and Yaris Verso.
How about mini MPV such as Scenic/Picasso?

Can confirm the Berlingo and variants can carry two upright bikes without any dismantling and still have room for half a tonne of camping gear. Unlike a regular car-based MPV the interior of the loadspace is very hard wearing and most importantly, wipe clean. But for safety's sake do try to get one with the optional load restraining net that goes behind the front seats.
