I own a '92 1.8 Golf which occasionally refuses to tick over until it is warmed up. This problem only happens intermittently. I estimate once a week. For the rest of the week it starts and runs fine and I use it for a 50 mile commute daily without any problems.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

sounds like the cold start valve,,,this happened to mine,,so i disconnected it..and it starts good now...
does it only do it on a REALLY cold day,,,then the next day when it is warmer it is fine???
if so ,,this is what it is..

Thanks for the reply. I think the opposite is happening to the problem you described. On milder mornings, the car starts fine and ticks over at 1200 RPM. However, after 1/2 a mile the tickover falls to 400 RPM and then the car stalls.
On colder mornings, the tickover starts at 1200 RPM and then falls gradually as the car warms up, settling on 800 RPM when fully warmed up.
If you have disconnected you cold start valve, does it start on cold mornings?

yes it will still start,,,it just wont get any extra fuelling...
in answer the the other question,,,then it sounds like the warm up valve!!!
which takes over after the cold start valve says ,,,it is now too warm for me to operate,,now its your turn,,,
warm up valve is a bit bit tricky,,,,try disconnecting it,,,see how it helps you...but dont worry,,it will not screw anything up,,all they do it say how much the mixture should be...
basically the same as your right foot...in a round about way..
