Ive seen a few threads recently with people querying the price differential that now exists between petrol and diesel.
Ive just watched an article on Working Lunch which stated that duty on diesel is 3.1p more than on unleaded petrol. (50.19p on unleaded v 53.26p on diesel)
This difference would then be increased (albeit slightly) by the VAT.
As an aside the duty on "red" diesel is 4p!!

Tony Bliar said it (fuel duty) was a "Carbon tax" I suppose he must have been mistaken?

Was your spelling of Bliar deliberate? ;-)

At my local tesco the differential between diesel and petrol has suddenly shrunk to 1p (Diesel 1p litre dearer)

According to HM Customs website rates of duty per litre are:-
Unleaded petrol 50.19, Ultra low sulpher petrol 47.10.
Bog Standard Diesel 53.27, Ultra low sulpher diesel 47.10
LRP same rate as unleaded.
IIRC practically all diesel is ultra low sulpher, not sure about petrol, it's twelve years since I bought any!

My own feeling about this is that as diesels are more efficient, Mr Brown must increase the duty in order to get the same return as a petrol.
