Hi Back Room,

Not sure who is aware but i have a 1994 Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel non turbo. This car is cheap to run/inusre etc. But being a 10 year old car parts wear out, i have owned this car for 10 months and spent £800 on parts/labour and i only bought it for £1000. The reason i bought a diesel was i had to commute quite a way to work. Since then ive changed jobs and only work 11 miles away, most of that journey is in 5th gear doing about 50-55mph. The service interval on my car is every 6k miles; and i cover 12k miles per year. I was wondering would it be better for me to buy a newer smaller engined petrol which would be nearly as economical and requires less servicing, the fuel would be cheaper and being newer i woulndt need to spend as much on repairs/ parts wearing out. I know this reverts to the old diesel v petrol debate, but considering my circumstances, is it really worth me having a diesel?

Having owned a Fiesta XR2i 16v (Zetec engine), I would defo buy a zetec again, and would probably buy a fiesta 1.25 zetec about a 3/4 year old model, with a few toys such as pas,a/c,rcl... all things my 306 doesnt have!

Any comments would be appreciated.

Not so cheap to run - £800 in parts/labour over a year is more than servicing on a new car.

Nothing wrong with the Fiesta 1.25, very sweet engine and servicing should be considerably less than £800 p.a. If it's outside warranty there are no shortage of indies who can maintain service history without costing a fortune.

What was the breakdown on parts/labour for the Pug, might be worth your time doing basic servicing yourself?

The parts which have been replaced in the 10 months ive had car are as following:

New wheel bearing
4 new tyres & balancing
Tracking
new exhaust
new discs/pads
cambelt change
2 services (all filters & fluids changed)
Mot failure which required 2 new front wishbones.
And just a few little things like bulbs etc.

My next service is due @ 100k miles, by that time i would have owned the car one year exactly and spent £900 on it, as mentioned earlier tjhe car only cost me £1000.

Any more comments would be appreciated.

Sorry you've had such a rotten time, Muttley. Looking at things like tyres, wishbones, discs, pads, exhaust and wheel bearing, and all in 10 months, leaves me wondering if this car had a dodgy MOT certificate when you bought it.

My view would be to consider keeping it now that you've spend money on it.

Apart from the wishbones, it seems that normal servicing etc is going on, though disks are not an annual event.

If you took the cost of the wishbones out, what would be the remaining cost of maintenance?

Quite so. Get shut and someone else could get the benefit of a now sorted-out car.

Most of those items could be required on a 3/4 year old car. Keep the Pug for another year and get some value out of your £800.

Yes certainly keep it at least a little while longer, now that you have had these parts done they can be forgotton about for a good while.

Pointless spending 800 and not getting the benefit.

Agree with posts above.
Most of those are long term things - cambelt will last at least 50k, exhaust should (on these diesels) last 5 years at least, brake discs, tyres, wishbones etc should also be a few years. I would even hazard a guess that several of these are the first time replaced since car was new. I would keep it to get the benefit unless something really big goes (clutch? head gasket?) otherwise you have paid these bill for someone else to benefit from.

Sounds as though you now have a well maintained car. If you are thinking of selling it, please may I have first refusal...

Seriously, doesn't sound as though there's much left to replace. You may be unlucky, but probably you are better off sticking with your current car for the reasons given above.

Alternatively, what about a Fiat Bravo/a? cheap as chips, from eBay.

Thanks for all your comments and IF i do think about selling it, it will be on here so you can have first refusal. Having considered it for a few days im gonna keep it since ive spent all that money on it. When is the best time of year 2 polish my car? as its miami blue (the 205 gti blue) comes up brilliant when polished, its a 3 door with the pug 306 gti-6 alloys looks great! and 50 mpg! what more can you ask for!
