Eastbourne council have gradually introduced parking fees by areas of outstanding natural beauty i.e. the south downs. They do nothing to improve these parking areas and to be frank it really gets up my nose. Most of us work and pay our taxes and when we fancy a walk to view the magnificent scenery we are asked to pay to see what is our heritage. Shame on you Eastbourne for making a few lousy £s from visitors.

I agree totally having experienced paying to park on part of the Eastbourne section of the South Downs this Xmas holiday. Only I didn't pay 'cos I couldn't pay 'cos I didn't have any cash on me.(Guilty as charged!) And it's not just the visitors - plenty of local residents (not just in Eastbourne) are unhappy about it - especially since they are already paying via their council taxes for maintaining the Downs.
Solution 1: park somewhere else - inevitably someone is going to end up blocking an access or causing an obstruction.
Solution 2: go to some other part of the Downs and not let Eastbourne benefit from your spending.
Solution 3: don't pay - Skye road bridge etc

Amazed it's taken them so long, in sunny Southend the council have made all the roads no parking within easy walking distance of the beach, but only between 1st March and 31st October, because nobody wants to park near the beach in the summer, do they?
Then just to rub it in they allow parking actually on the seafront but pay and display from 09:00 - 21:00 SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. Amazed anyone comes here really, we make them feel so welcome.....
It's really good at this time of the year though, you can park close to the beach so you don't have to carry the bucket and spade and deckchair so far. The downside is just that I have trouble making sandcastles with my gloves on, and the ice cream kiosks are shut, apart from Rossi's, of course, they never shut!

By way of contrast, the delightful (and probably struggling) Harwich & Dovercourt Bay, have loads of free parking areas directly by the sea, all year round, no time limits.

In fact, having looked around, I could only find one pay car park, in Dovercourt town centre, although I'm sure they will have more of those at Parkeston Quay.

I have been trying to forget about that since I read it on teletext this morning.

You really couldn't make it up could you?

So should they close all the trendy bars and clubs because not many middle class, middle aged, whites want to go there?

>>apart from Rossi's,>>

You have a Rossi's in Southend then - we've had one in my seaside town for donkey's years, made to the recipe of a well known Italian. Wonder if they are linked?

So moorish it's untrue....:-)

Be interested to know which is your seaside town.
Rossi's have been part of Southend life for many, many years and jealously guard their recipe which they say is more of an Italian gelato rather than our traditional hard ice cream. Don't mind what goes in it, once you've tasted it you're spoilt for life, no other ice cream tastes quite like it. Sadly they are now looking for buyers for the business as the family members still involved wish to retire, just hope it stays the same. Thought Francis Rossi of Status Quo might retire and take it on as a retirement job, apparently he is a relation, but he still seems busy Rocking All Over The World.
To keep the mods happy; Rossi's ice cream vans must be amongst the oldest everyday working vehicles on the road, at least one has a pre 1963 reg no, next time I see it I must remember to note the maker as I'm sure they will probably be one of the first things to go if they get new owners.

I have never seen any Rossi van which is younger than 1970s and the really odd thing is that none have been soft ice cream vans!

Nearest thing I have found to Rossi soft is made with Walls 'Golden? Meadow' mix, but not all Walls liveried vans use it as it is more expensive than others.

Devotees of Rossi with deep pockets may be interested to hear that the Company is up for sale for only £2.5m!

Looking for a partner who has around 25,000 times my available capital.

I live in Eastbourne and do indeed pay my council tax. Residents do not have to pay to park at Butts Brow,(the car park you are probably refering to). We just display our residents card in the car. I'm interested to know what improvements you think they should make. It's an unmade car park for hill walkers etc. An ice cream van does park there in the summer though!

Eastbourne doesn't have a monopoly in this field - my local council has always charged, for instance, for parking on its miles of beaches as well as on its (often poorly maintained) town centre roads.

I seem to remember something about the coastline belonging to the Crown.

I seem to remember something about the coastline belonging to the Crown !!

The crown only owns up to the highwater mark only, in Scotland its judged on how far the local laird can go out on his horse at low tide and throw a spear !!!

I am not interested in them improving the car parking area. The whole point is that they have no outlay so how do they justify charging? My complaint is that the English countryside belongs to us all and is not an opportunity for councils to make a few measly pounds out of visitors.

"Hill walking". On the South Downs?????

Be sarcastic mike100 if you want, but the last time I looked out of my window the South Downs were indeed hills.
As for the coastline being owned by the crown, I can't comment except for the fact that the crown doesn't pay for the upkeep - we council tax payers have that priviledge!

Durham Council seems to be of the same mind. Having introduced a pointless 'Congestion' charge, they followed this up by covering the entire city in parking meters. They fit in very well with the historic city centre!

Add this to the fact they also closed 4 main car parks and it makes you wonder why tourists ever visit! I certainly don't shop there anymore because paying £1.20 an hour sticks in the throat a bit after wopping great council tax increases.

As for the congestion charge, it beggars belief. I wouldn't call a queue of 5 or 6 cars (on Saturdays) congestion!
