I know of someone driving with no mot (expired 2+ months ago),also brake fluid requires filling up occassionaly. tax ran out recently. Person says they cannot afford to get things legal and won`t/can`t listen to reason. Is there somewhere to report this, that isn`t going to reveal my id. Does anyone know of the procedures and would the owner get a criminal record or does it not have to be that serious?

If you wish to report a vehicle that appears to be unlicensed, the details should be sent in writing to your nearest DVLA Local Office. This may be done anonymously.
The details must include:
* the registration mark;
* location of the vehicle;
* the make/model, colour;
wherever possible, please provide:
* the time it can be seen on the public road;
* name and address of the owner;
The information provided can then be used for further investigations by an Inquiry Officer who will make a formal sighting of the vehicle and complete a witness statement.
You may also send the details by e-mail to unlicensed.use@dvla.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 0800 032 5202.

Thanks for that info, although i think the dvla are only interested in the licence which has only just run out. I`m guessing they`ll allow 2 weeks grace
|
Maybe Crimestoppers? They would send details to the nearest Police station and they would investigate.

You can e-mail the DVLA annoymously - or telephone on an 0800 number - and provide all the requisite information.
Believe you me it works...:-)
My next door neighbour used to run several untaxed, uninsured vehicles and I used to report him using the old forms; however, that meant he knew who had sent the information as you had to sign it (a copy was presented to him in the post).

If J Scroat has not renewed his Excise Licence by the end of the month and not declared SORN or been picked up by APNR then the February computor cull by DVLA should bring him an 8O pound fine.
Showing an expired Licence or none at all is going to attract BiB/Clone BiB attention.

But does this system actually work?
How much grace do you get? I had an MOT problem which meant I went almost a week untaxed, didn't get penalised thankfully.
|
i once had a company car (i inherited it) and didnt even realise it was over three years old never mind that it didnt have an MOT, until the lease company rang me up one day and said "oh sorry the MOTs 3 months overdue can you take it to a garage"
would have been an interesting day in court if I'd been asked for docs by police
|
I had a colleague done for no MOT. He got done, not the lease company of employer. The driver is responsible - same with out of date tax and bald tyres.
|
Ran DVLA, they are not interested till after 14 days from expiry of licence and said the lack of mot was a police matter. Thought there may be a database of vehicles with current MOT.

You would have been OK not having an MOT until the end of the year. As the DVLA don't know exactly when a car's built, their "date of manufacture" and hence when an MOT is due after 3 years, is always 31st December. It doesn't work that way in subsequent years though :-)
It does confuse somewhat, as my car was first registered on 8th October 1989, but was apparently manufactured 31st December 1989.

I once hired a van from a 'reputable' main dealer garage and only after driving over 100 miles did I notice it had no tax disc.
It's worth checking if a hired vehicle is taxed.
Cheers, SS
