Mr R was very impressed with his Aldi SatNav Christmas present.
Has anyone else used this on the A34 near Oxford? Did it work OK? The poor lady must have told us about 15 times to bear left in the space of 2-3 miles where the road is dead straight. Also navigating through Oxford she seemd to have her lefts and rights mixed up. (Typical - this was the first time we decided to 'trust' the system - what a disaster!)
I wonder whether our software is OK. We've noticed minor problems and of course recent road changes (A34/M4 for example) don't show yet, but this was a different league.
I looked on the pocketgps site forum and couldn't see anyone else reporting a problem (and it's probabaly a more appropriate place to post other satnav glitches you have encountered than here)
Hope someone can help!

I don't know the answer but it is more likely to be your GPS antennae bits playing up, and misleading 'er inside as to where to actually are. Same happened to a mate with SmartNav - she had him on a road about 10 miles adrift from where he actually was. The fault seemed to clear itself after a few days. A complete power off and reboot may help..?

My Garmin sometimes gets confused and I think it's down to the signal. On the A42 we were about 20 miles from the junction with the M1, distance counting down as normal. It then refereshed and thought we were at the junction! A few minutes later it refreshed again and was OK. It also hates fog - on a recent trip to Cardiff the locator arrow was never on the road, we went the whole distance crossing fields!

Thanks for the replies.
I should have said that we have driven down the A34 a couple of times now and she still gives the same instructions. (And yes, we did have it switched on for a route we know like the back of our hands...novelty value hasn't worn off yet!)
The instructions north bound are fine.

Rebecca, where specifically ?
I occasionally have an issue in Oxford, but not on the A34 as far as I can remember.
Mine, which is not Aldi, doesn't always understand priority. It can sometimes say bear or turn left when that's what the road was doing anyway. But it happens because there was a side road at that point off to the right.

Nice to have a map when you need it . . .

Hi Mark,
It's going southbound on the A34, about a mile after the Peartree roundabout, and before the 50mph section. I suppose the road isn't dead straight there and the whole thing probably does bear left, but that's true of lots of roads we've driven along and satnav hasn't gone funny there.
It's comforting to know that Oxford has been an issue to someone else! It didn't recognise pedestrianised streets, bus only roads, and mixed up left and rights. I've never driven in Oxford town centre before, so wouldn't know if there have been recent changes.
|
Rebecca,
The centre of Oxford was disorganised back in about 2001 (maybe late 2000) creating bus only routes, pedestrianised areas etc. Driving through the centre is certainly not obvious...often quicker to walk as the car route now goes all over the place.
Is your sat nav map more recent than 2001? I assume you have only just bought it but when was the internal map/cd published/last updated?

Not sure of the exact date as I don't have it to hand, but it does show the M6 toll road, so can't be too old.

Its almost certainly an anomoly on the mapping vector database supplied with the SatNav and as such can only be corrected by a map software upgrade/release

I had an issue there in the past, which sounds similar. It was on the original database which was dated 2002, I think. The issue disappeared on the later disk which was Dec 2003 or Jan 2004. More or less, I can't remember exactly.
It sounds like you have an older map in there. Since mine is not Aldi, then I have no idea what the Aldi Sat Nav update approach is. For mine it is simply to log onto the website and get sent a new disk.

Thanks very much for the replies. I will check the dates and contact the software people - navigon.

A google on Navigon and aldi brings up numerous reviews and discussions on the aldi medion unit and navigon software. One recent (June2004) review claims that on one version the M6toll hasnt appeared yet! Also lots requests for map updates but none forthcoming.

Some info extracted from that thread.
Medion website is www.medion.co.uk/
Some info on the previous Aldi offer here:- www.pocketgps.co.uk/medion-review.php
