Just been trying to find a decent rate for a rental for a car in Sarasota, Florida. The cheapest quote Im getting is exactly HALF that of the rip off rate given by Hertz.
But Hertz looks like the only company that will do GPS system rentals.
Is there any way around this?? i.e renting a GPS system itself would still be cheaper. Are there any places that do this??
Alternatively does anyone know any other rental companies that do cars that include GPS systems??
As you can imagine, with the unfamiliarity of a new place,I would rather not have the extra burden of having to pore over maps in trying to find a place!
(The difference in rentals is just unbelievable i.e £32/day for an SUV/Full Size, all inclusive versus Hertz's £58/day!)

Check the small print carefully on your cheapie, with reference to CDW, Liability, and most of all Inter-state use if you need it.

Strange. I've never noticed Hertz being particularly more or less overall than the other majors. Are you sure that you're comparing like with like ?
|
hertz probably has special offers locally, if you could get access to a local newspaper or similar
some of the bigger cars may have gps built in, although they probably wont guarantee which car you get
to be honest i dont think u really need gps

I don't think GPS is necessary either. Roads are well signposted and very straightforward. If you can get access to the internet over there, Yahoo.com maps are free and you can get door to door directions laid out for you.

Got the cheapest network by clicking through on car rental on airline-network.co.uk, which gave me a rate of
£126 for 4 days including-
Loss Damage Waiver
Supplemental Liability Insurance
Under/Uninsured Motorist protection.
This is by a company called Dollar Car Rental which I havent heard of personally but does seem to offer cars throughout the
U.S.
Hertz's best quote was
£206 for the same 4 days, same location
including both
Loss Damage Waiver
Supplemental Liability Insurance
This is the least they could do it for, which is still much more than the other quote!

Avis was very competative - booked through expedia.co.uk.
|
|
The initial quote Hertz gave me was £232 for the same dates.
On the second call I got that reduced to £206 after a long discussion with the supervisor!

Dollar Car Rental is actually one of the others - maybe it was Alamo, but its one of them.
|
Hertz is a company more aimed to corporate contracts than individual's one-offs.
|
Dollar is one of the major players and as you have seen, cheaper than Hertz. I wouldn't hesitate to get a car through Dollar at all and have done many times in the past.

My uncle spent three weeks in California and got a superb deal at the last minute through www.carsabroad.com
They do actually rent through Hertz and all the majors, but as a consolidator can offer a much better price, though their best price is unlikely to be Hertz.
In fact it won't be clear which company is their best price unless you can work it out from the car category names. However if you phone them they may be able to elaborate and provide advice as to whether GPS would be available.

When I went to Menorca last year, Hertz were by far the cheapest!

|
Dollar is good, used them in the states. Also used Alamo.

Thanks for that link DavidHM - carsabroad look quite a bit cheaper than I was expecting to pay.
With regard to the heading of this thread, it's quite common for different suppliers to charge different prices for the same product and to single out the most expensive and accuse them of rip off is pathetic. They just happen to be not suitable for your needs - so move on and look elsewhere. They probably don't want your business.
I'd be modifying the heading if I were a mod

Hmmm perhaps, but I have just edited the opening post header, rather than go through all of them, unless you specifically want me to edit them all or delete the thread?
