Yup, I posted about this a couple of days ago. Almost squashed a kid on one when he buzzed around me when I was turning left. They're below the height of both windows and mirrors, and this was at night.

In my day job working with the local authority in Community Safety I can testify that these mini motos are no laughing matter. Recently got video footage of them racing down the footpath at 40 mph weaving in and out through a stupid crowd who were there to egg them on. Bought in kit form at £90-100 and then built and sold for £250 -300. Dealers dont keep records of who they sold them to -(they are for 'off road' use. Waiting for the first fatality to land on my desk in the New Year after the Christmas rush of sales.

One of these has been buzzing about my local for a month or two now. Not ridden by a kid either, but a guy in his thirties. I have made my mind up to get to know him soon, in the hope of blagging a ride. I have seen these racing at bike shows, and they look tremendous fun. My local karting centre is talking about getting them in for the summer, can't wait as it is about time my GP career took off.
Totally irresponsible to ride them on the road though, of course.

Myself & the brother in law treated ourselves to one this year - not the tiny size, more of a midi-moto. £320 from a dealer in Hull. It's a beautiful little thing and great fun, good for about 45kph with next to no acceleration (it seems the engine is from a chainsaw!) twin lights, brake light, indicators, electric start.. Love tinkering with it, the in-law had the brakes to bits the other day (discs from a mountain bike). And yes, we ride it off road, quasi-legally on deserted east-yorkshire winter beaches and a to-let car-park. People's reactions have all been good, although I can really see why negativity occurs with all the kids riding them on-road.

Tom,
You weren't at the bike show at the NEC a few months ago were you?

No, missed that one. I've seen them at either Docklands Arena or the Ally Pally show a few years ago. They were letting the public have a go, but the queue was so long I didn't bother.
I am only allowed to attend bike shows now if I leave my credit cards at home.
