My Vectra has finally succumbed to the old idle speed problem which has been traced to - surprise, surprise - the idle aor intake control valve. I have a shiny new one all ready to go on but I was just wondering whether I can fit this myself, or should I take it to my local Vx specialist to do the job.
I have very little experience of car repairs but I have done a few jobs such as replacing the exhaust, spark plugs, etc. And I'm not an idiot so if it's a very straightforward job, I wouldn't mind having a go.
Someone here must have done this job before.. any advice?

To be honest with you, I've never changed one on a Vectra. I've previously taken one off my old Cavalier (on many occasion) to clean, but that was easy to find and remove.
Now I'm not saying the Vectra ISCV is harder to do, and looking at the instructions my links point to, it looks fairly straight forward.

Vectra the same as 16v Cavalier ECOTEC. Remove air inlet trunk (2 hose clips) disconnect breather hose from trunk. Disconnect electrical connector from ISCV. undo and remove 2 5mm allen screws securing valve to throttle and discard gasket. Fit new valve with new gasket and reassemble inlet trunking. Start engine and allow to idle for a few minutes. You may find it worthwhile to clean the throttle disc and check the PCV port in the throttle body is clear while you have it in bits. This is the smaller of the two hoses coming off the cam cover. follow it round and hopefully it enters the throttle body just under the throttle disc (1/16" hole) although earlier models routed this hose to a water heated port on the manifold between 2 & 3 inlets and is a real pig to clear.The blockage of this PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)port is the reason the valve and throttle get so clagged up.

Perhaps I should mention it was an old 8 valve, 2 litre Cavalier, not the troublesome Ecotec one ;o)

Hi chaps,
I also have a X reg Vectra 1.8 Ecotec and i find that when idling the engine revs and the rev counter goes up and down between 500/800 rpm, almost like its looking for a position to sit at. Sometimes it drops low enough to stall the engine, could this be the same fault as on robZilla's Vectra ?
Any info gratefully received.

Sounds like exactly the same problem that I had. I have just this minute finished replacing the valve and the problem has gone away. FYI, I got a replacement valve from www.autovaux.com - couldn't find the actual part on their website but just give them a bell. It cost £65+VAT (over £100 at Vx dealer).

Forgot to say, many thanks to Dynamic Dave for the instructions. I've saved over £100 on the part and labour by sourcing the valve and fitting it myself, so thank you.
