HELP! My BMW dealer has just called they have advised me that a solarnoid has gone within the cars SMG hydraulics pump. They advise me that the solarnoid cannot be replaced so will have to replace the whole pump unit approx cost £1000.
Do I just cough up or is there an alternative, I do not want to sell the car.

Well, I don't know whether they are trying to pull a fast one on me!

Whats the symptom Gary?
Usually, these systems are self diagnosis only and if they say the XXXX Solenoid is O/C the that is all there is to it. Replacement! Ouch.

Calling Andy Bairsto. What's the word from Germany on solanoids for SMG gearchange hydraulics an M3 Evos? Is it a well known fault. Is there a simple answer? If not, is the whole unit cheaper in Germany?

Almost as bad as the prices for replacement Porsche parts on Driven last night. £875 for a headlamp unit!!!!

That was ridiculous! The only sensibly priced item on the Porsche was the windscreen at £250ish!

Gary,
This is probably not too feasible an idea, but I?ll suggest it anyway, as £1000 is certainly expensive just to replace a defective solenoid.
As a solenoid is only a winding of enamelled copper wire maybe it is possible to have it rewound. Of course, this assumes that it has gone open-circuit, but this is the usual failure mode.
Unfortunately, it?s likely that the solenoid is potted to protect if from the elements, so it may be too difficult for an electric motor re-wind company to establish how many turns of wire are on the bobbin.

It's also most probably a unit contained with the auto-box aswell. Which means it will be sealed to protect it against the harsh operating conditions.
Not my idea of fun, stripping one of these units.
Best stump up the cash and put it down to experience.

Gary
Has this failure anything to do with the Craner Curves by any chance Gary?

John,
I don't think so as the car was behaving itself on that specific day.

Just thought I'd ask
