I have run two turbo-diesel automatics; a Peugeot 605DT (since deceased) and a new Hyundai Trajet CRDT (brand new this Sept - only 2,300miles so far).
With both of theme, they were very sluggish in the morning, m until they were warmed through. To get out of the house I really have to put my foot down to escape the oncoming traffic.
However, recently, I swapped to a Galaxy 1.9TDI 130bhp 6-sp manual for about a month. In the morning, it starts much faster (no churn at all - with the Hyundai it takes a couple of turns) and is ready to go straight away. No obvious performance difference between cold or hot.
So what's going on? and is there anything I can do to assit the Hyundai or to minimise damage?
Thanks

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

I've noticed the same thing with my Octavia SDi lately. I've recently moved to a house on a main road (with a 30mph limit) and even if there's nothing in sight when I pull out from the driveway, I've invariably got someone 3 feet from my bootlid before I'm into 4th gear. (I know the SDi is slow, but it's not that slow.) It seems to pick up a bit after about 500-600 yards though, maybe there is some kind of cold start mechanism which restricts things until the oil is flowing properly?

Most modern cars, petrol and dieasel utilise an exhaust gas recirc system to improve emmisions while the engine is getting up to temperature (the EGR recirculates exhaust gasses that contain unburnt fuel), this could cause the car to feel sluggish during warm up though I have never noticed it myself.

I have the same thing on cold mornings in my 306 diesel. This morning when the outside temp was 0 c,it definately felt unusually slow and very noisy (even for a diesel).Gets more and more noticeable the colder it is outside.

Are you using supermarket diesel ? Do you just do local runs or low mileage ? I found that NOT using supermarket or Jet Diesel (I now use Shell, BP or Total) improved intial performance on my Focus and a weekly high speed run down the motorway or dual carrageway for 10 miles improved economy as well.

The Galaxy diesels do the "sluggish" bit moving off from a cold start for the first few hundred yards as well. If you conside the Galaxy not to suffer from this, then your other diesels must be 'orrible!
