My 1999 1.4 306 has a poor tick over, and surges up and down. When it is hot and the engine is turned off then started it will not tick over at all.Is there a simple solution to this or checks that can be carried out, or is it a case of specialist diagnostics from the dealership?

I had a 1.8 (different engine) which had an identical problem and it turned out to be a gummed up idle stepper motor. Doesn't log a fault code in the ECU which confuses the hell out of the dealers. It took eight visits before they diagnosed it.
Symptoms:
Occasionally difficult starting
Stalling when engine speed returns to idle (pulling up at lights / roundabout, or revving the engine in neutral)
With the engine idling, sometimes just gently touching the throttle would cause the engine to die.
Revs "bounce" - nearly stalls, then revs to about 1800, nearly stalls, revs to 1800 etc etc - repeats until it either stalls, or you drive away
Sometimes idles too fast (1500-2000 RPM) when the engine gets hot (i.e. sitting in traffic)

Also check the MAF sensor at the same time. It sounds like the stepper motor. Get it from Europarts/GSF parts its usually cheaper than Peugeot spares prices.

Definately the stepper motor, either failing or dirty.
Common problem on TU engined 106 and 306 models.
