Could anybody recommend a very simple cd/radio with rds for my mothers Arosa.

Hard to come by these days - I too looked for a simple one last year - they all seemed to have mega-boom-bass and concert hall buttons or other ludicrous attachments. All I wanted was something clear & easy to use with decent sound - suprisingly difficult as most of this type fall at the cheaper end of the market. I bought a Sony for about £100 in the end, can't remember the model.
Same with mobile phones - I want one to make phone calls (shock horror). No pictures, no video clips no nothing, just a mobile phone which is easy to use. Not many of these around either.

I bought a new one at the weekend that might suit. JVC KD-G501.
The basic controls are 6 station buttons, a rotary volume control and 2 buttons to choose either radio or CD. Repeated presses on the radio selector runs through the other presets - FM2, FM3, AM, so you can store 18 FM presets.
It also plays MP3s, which is the reason I got it. 94 quid at Costco, a bit more on line, EG Car Audio Discount £120.

They all seem to come with three hundred tiny buttons and a firework display these days. The standard radio in the MINI was fantastic, just what you needed and nothing more.
The closest aftermarket one I've seen is the Pioneer P77MP. Really simple and neat, but because it's got very good sound circuitry and can play MP3s &tc, it's not cheap. I'm saving up for one/looking for a bargain on eBay!

Browsing in Halfords today they had sets ranging from £79 that looked fairly simple to use. With only a radio/cassette at the moment I might be tempted myself.

I fitted one of these about 8 weeks ago. £219+£10 P&P at www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/parts2004_Pioneer_CD...P
It looks simple, but in reality it's a pig to use. Most of the functions are driven by repeated presses of one of the tiny buttons that is identical to the preset buttons in appearance and feel, followed by a press of the right hand dial. Far from intuitive and very distracting. If you have any doubt about the radio reception in your car I would get the aerial and any aerial amp looked at as the reception on this unit is inferior to my previous headunit, a Blaupunkt CD32 Lausanne.
Also distracting is that the dimming function reduces light output on the display but leaves the two dials lit up like searchlights whilst all the other functions are totally unlit.
On the plus side the sound on CD and WMA is simply sublime. Very natural, making full use of the Burr-Brown DACs. I can live with the functionality issue for this alone. It also looks superb in my carbon fibre dash.

Did you lose the plastic one then ?

Leave him alone, he got a few letters wrong ok? Not his fault he got the wiring wrong fitting the unit and got a "carbon fired" dash

Bums to the both of you

I'm not going to say Halfords are awful because I can't ;-)
However, I bought a cd player brand new from a well known site for £130 - it was £249 in Halfords.

Thanks ND - I've not had a chance to play with one, it did look simple but it's really useful to know that I might mount the odd kerb changing tracks... :-)
I'll have to find one before I splash out.
Cheers,
