Andy,
aircon not working won't help at all. Does it just need a recharge or is it more serious?

I'd walk away from this if I found the aircon wasn't working, I suspect that a lot of other potential punters would too.

I guess you're looking around £2,000-2,500 as is.

Malcolm:

Tha a/c hasn't worked since he bought the car. Advice from garage was a recharge might work but likely seals gone too. I am inclined to think that on a car of this age and value its not worth putting much time and money into a potentially expensive problem. Perhaps better to advertise with no mention of a/c?

I agree. You must, of course, tell them it's faulty if they ask, but even then, the prospective buyer may even see it as an opportunity to turn a non-a/c car into one with. After all retrofitting a/c would be a complete non starter.

If he is serious about selling, do the following:

1. Find the closest spec car on Autotrader.
2. Make yours cheaper.

It's always worked for me - sold to the first caller each time. So long as you're firm during negotiations ("you won't find cheaper", etc, etc) you probably won't be far off what you may have got if you priced high and conceded more during bargaining - albeit with far less interest in the first place.

By this reckoning, I'd price your brother's around 2.5K and definitely less than 3k. So long as it is roadworthy and MoT'd I suspect the add-ons and recent work will have more of an impact on saleability than price.

Thanks and I totally agree, my experience too! Was after any other thoughts as well.

Just to update, he's sold it. I didn't mention here that it had horribly rusty rear arches (that put a few viewers off). Accepted £1850 against the asking price of £1950, so I think he got a result , especially at this time of year.
