hi ,my neighbour woke up on sunday morning with a load of gearbox oil on his drive, his x plate 25000 mile scenic has a hairline crack in his gearbox, what can cause something like that to happen.?
he bought it from an independant dealer 2 years ago.
do you think he has any recourse against him or renault?
can a cog fly off inside and crack it
im quite concerned as i was thinking of buying one of these myself ony the day before
any help appreciated
thanks

If the crack leads to / from a bearing housing, it is possible that something solid got jammed in the mesh.
If the crack is related to the stiffening webs and engine / gearbox mountings, it is possible that it is caused by fatigue resulting from flexure of the gearbox.
I know nothing about his best options for recourse.

I know of a chap who had a crack in the differential housing of his Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun) which, of course, was an imported vehicle.
Caused, apparently, from when it was lashed down to the deck of the ship by chains!

An internal failure could cause it - but presumably he would have been well aware had this happened! Otherwise its down to a defect in the casting or some impact (which may be visible on the casing). My money would be on a poor casting.

As there are very few reports of this happening on other scenics, my money is on an impact of some kind. Could also be the after effects of crash damage.

Agree with RF, not heard of any problems in this respect. Would be interesting to know if the car had been in a thump, could have contributed to the problem.

I had a Renault 16 which jammed in reverse, turned out to be impact damage which cracked a selector carrier.
Might be worth getting an independent inspection, if the car showed previous accident damage, it might help your case.
(especially if the car was sold with no accident history)
