I am decided on a VAG group diesel and as I see it my choices are thus
A 2002 Golf GTDI 150
a 2003-4 Seat Ibiza 130 Diesel Sport
a Skoda Fabia VRS with the same 130 engine
All around the 10.5 to 12.5K mark.
Which drives best and which is the fastest?

Bit if a discrepancy between the Golf and the others, I have to say. You probably don't need the 150's performance and you are paying over the odds for soemthing that's not tangibly better than the others 90% of the time.
Have you looked for a Seat Leon with the TD option? Sightly bigger and nicer looking than the Ibiza. Others than comment on the Skoda; I've not driven it. Both of the others are okay, but neither is the world's most fluent handler.
Which is the fastest? Whichever one you drive, of course!

The performance is important as I regularly drive in Germany and find need of good, hard acceleration and top speed. I wondered about the 150 Golf as it may only be as fast of the rest due to its heavy weight? Inspite of having more horses it must be heavier than a fabia/ibiza. Whatever the car is to be remapped for more power again from REVO or similar.
I wonder if anyone knows the faster? In gear, top end I think the Golf but questions questions.
Also worried about the reliability of the Golf and also handling comes into the equation. If I had the money my car would be a 330D Touring but for now a VAG car will have to do.

If it must be a VAG car then look at a Bora, probably quieter at speed than a Golf and perhaps a bit cheaper for the same age etc.

Get the Leon 130. Most late model 130 TDIs good for 180bhp with a chip and that is serious fast. See www.seatcupra.net

Only one choice Skoda Fabia VRS.
Got a friend who bought one three months ago
Simply fantastic car : fast : good value:
In fact just traded my car in for something faster just to keep up.

I'd have to recommend the Golf. Obviously I am biased as the owner of a 130GT TDI. Extremely comfortable, good spec level and (so far) relatively inexpensive to maintain.
Suppose it depends whether you need the space of a Golf or whether something smaller will do.
I've looked at the Leon in the past (SE spec) and found it to be very basic inside. Each to their own, though!

Thank you for the help, the space would be nice but no so important as get up and go/handling.
The Leon I like but they all seem to be too expensive as I´d rather an older Golf with higher spec than a Leon with lower spec and I fear worse handling?
The reason I want a VAG diesel is that they are easily power boosted compared to something like a Focus TDCI, a car which I prefer over the VAG alternatives for its sporty handling. However at 115bhp it´s just ttoo slow as a test drive revealed.
I have a test drive at Skoda of the Fabia and an old model Octavia with 130bhp diesel.
We´ll see how it goes.
The ultimate for me would be a BMW330D touring with the 204bhp engine but I just cannot afford one sadly.

Phil, that's absolutely fine. We're quite happy to allow links to other motoring forums specialising in different car makes etc. One of few links that we don't allow are to the Times, which is a direct competitor to the Telegraph, the paper that Honest John has a column in.
If you want your ling to be clickable.....
