**** Poll closed. ****

This weeks poll, as suggested by Tom Shaw is now available.

"Have you ever driven uninsured?"

Deliberately.
Mistakenly.
Never.

I assume by the results at present, that the 28 out of 47 who say they have never driven uninsured have never purchase da second hand car privately after having a test drive.

Almost without exceptionm, anyone doing this will have been uninsured (IMHO) !

My MoreThan policy.

YOUR COVER WHILE DRIVING ANY OTHER CAR
This policy also covers you against claims for costs you may have to pay as a result of:
* causing injury to or the death of anyone; or
* the damage you cause to another person?s property (we will pay up to £20,000,000 for any claim or claims arising from one incident).
You are covered while driving any other car only if all the following apply:
* You are 25 years of age or older.
* You are driving with the owners permission.
* You are not entitled to make a claim for the damage under any other policy of insurance.
* The car is not owned by (or hired under a hire purchase agreement by or leased to) you or your husband or wife.
* The car is being driven in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

I consider this good enough for me to test drive a prospective purchase.

I think you may have missed the point, Longdriver, that most insurance policies allow you to drive any car with TP only cover.

However, this does raise an interesting point - first car purchases. I bought my first car from a dealer, but would that dealer have insurance (I assumed so otherwise would he let me test drive it?) or was I actually, unwittingly driving uninsured?

Also, in a similar vein, when I first passed my test, my mother put me on her insurance via her broker. It wasn't until I'd been driving 3 or 4 months that we got a letter from her insurer saying they weren't prepared to insure me due to my age and the type of car. We had a cover note from the broker, but again, does this mean I was unwittingly driving uninsured? (AFAIK no premium was paid over and above her initial one as the broker was waiting for confirmation of what it would be extra. I suspect they should not have issued the cover note actually)

Hence if not a car owner already, when test driving a second hand car from a private seller, you are not insured....

Judging by the poll results, the several million uninsured drivers don't contribute to polls on this website!

You seem to be assuming that no one makes arrangements when test drives in cars offered for sale take place. This is clearly not the case.

Having sold cars in the past I have made sure that either, my own insurance is organised on the car, even if it is via an extension to the policy on the car I am keeping, or the potential buyer has appropriate TP cover on his policy.

Friends of mine have done the same and gone to a lot of trouble in some cases.

It's quite simple really and I don't consider that the poll is compromised by this issue.

You're probably right though, the millions of intentionally and persistently uninsured drivers out there won't answer the poll, however, do we want these idiots in the backroom? - I think not.

My reason for suggesting the question was that a few years ago I bought a new bike from a dealer just before going on holiday. I didn't want to leave it at home while away as I didn't have a garage at the time so he agreed to keep it till I came back. I sorted the insurance and arranged to pick it up the day we got back, but with a two week gap overlapping a month I cocked up the dates, and it wasn't till I got home with the bike and was sorting the paperwork that I realised the insurance didn't start till the following day.

Would have been an catastrophic mistake had I had an accident or got a routine pull, as 6 points minimum would have meant end of career for no longer being a fit and proper person to remain a driving instructor.
