Blast. Now I need another car. - oldbanger
Coming into work this morning I was going around a roundabout. A
big oval one. A medium-sized lorry pulled onto it right in front
of me. I could not stop before hitting it.

Now I need a new (second-hand) car.

I know very little about available makes and models.

What do the panel recommend to replace a 1.8 petrol Ford Escort
estate? I'd like a diesel estate. My budget is up to £4000, but
a bit less would be nice. I was quite happy with the old car's
performance, something similar would be fine. I am not too
image-concious.

A colleague of mine bought a 3 and a bit year old Vauxhall astra 1.7 diesel estate from the local auction for £3300 and he has been very pleased with it. Loads of room, good economy and so far reliable

Personal note for daveyK_UK,

I'm sure it's been mentioned to you before about typing soley in UPPER CASE (classed as shouting in cyberland).

That's the last time I edit one of your posts, from now on I will just delete - which is far easier.

Citroen Xsara HDi Estate? £4k would even get you a Xantia HDi 110 estate or 406 HDi Estate in good condition.

All the Xantia/Peugot HDi 110 estates that I can see on the 'net seem to cost rather more than 4K - more like 5.5K - they look nice, but I can't afford that, unfortunately...

If you like Fords, www.gtccar.co.uk/cars/search3.asp?Id=221868 Not the best engine but brilliant value.

Otherwise, a 100k mile, year 2000 Xantia or 406 should be attainable. Or what about a C5 110 HDi LX tinyurl.com/5cutu in white? It even has a five figure mileage - just. I wouldn't rule out the HDi 90 in the Xsara, or even the older XUD with the turbo. I drive an XUDT 406 with 90 bhp and it's slow but the lower power engine in the smaller Xsara would be fine.

Failing that, it's doubtful that you'd get a nice Octavia TDi within budget but one would be ideal if you could. As ever, the Astra provides solid used value, though in general go for the best spec and the most powerful engine you can afford. (That said, there's an 82k, one owner, 1999 2.0 in the Trader for £1,995... shurely shum mishtake!)

Or how about a 306 Estate? Should be able to get a nice '99 or '00 Hdi for about £4k.

How on earth do you find these? I've been googling away merrily but with a lack of results such as these!! Maybe it's experience?

What about buying on ebay?

I'm not really a ford enthusiast, my old Escort seemed rather clumsy and porky - although it performed quite adequately.

I've been offered a Renault 25 for £100 that needs a new exhaust,
MOT till April - as a stopgap - comments?

For a ton, there's not really a great deal you could complain about and as you say - it would only be a stopgap.
