I nearly pulled out in front of an S40 the other day - twilight, heavy drizzle, roundabout, moved my head backwards and forwards to see around the A pillar, thought, he is indicating to leave the roundabout - it's safe for me to pull out. Whoops! He is not indicating, his indicators are on all the time!
Is this legal in the U.K.?
I have seen American spec. Goldwings with these running lights.
What happens when you indicate?
Does the rhs one go out when you indicate left?

The Volvo running lights are not in the place of normal indicators, rather set in the bumper in the 1st and 4th quarter of the side of the car.
I can see where you are coming from, but they are not in the same position as indicators....unless the car had an electrical fault and the indicators were on all the time-but that would be unusual!
I think when these Volvos came to the UK there was some talk about the orange running lights looking like indicators.
Not sure how the lighting works on USA cars though!

I think later ones are in the indicators, as in the later LandRover Discovery.
Or is this Owners putting bulbs in the empty holders for that 'Sophisticated Yank' look?

... and when the water gets into them they can flash and look linke indicators. It has been going on wiht the S40 / V40 for years.

USA cars have orange side marker lights at the front, and red at the back.
These are mandatory...but optional in Europe. Also...if these are fitted, the back ones but be orange unless they are part of the rear light fitting, in which case they can be red - as on all 2005 model year Volvo's.

Never assume it is safe to pull out when they\'re indicating until you actually see them slow down and change direction. Even then, excercise caution.

A flashing indicator means one thing: An indicator is flashing, that's all.

Not always, on BMW it means the computer is up the pole. You can be sure the driver didnt put it on.

It also means that car is one of the very few BMWs fitted with the optional indicator pack.

Yes I know that DD, that\'s why I said I nearly pulled out.
I was hoping for a reply from Dwight Van Driver, as he seems to have a good book on motoring law. These orange lamps are where the repeaters are on most cars.
I have a copy of the \"Traffic Officers Companion\" that refers to them being compulsory on 12metre trailers.

On my V40 the side orange side marker lights are completely separate to the indicator side repeater lights.
I notice these and find them very useful on a dark night. If a car so equiped is sitting at a T junction waiting to turn left and you are approaching from its RHS on the main road you often cannot see its head or side lights (car angled away from you) its rear may be hidden by a building or hedge and the active indicator will be on the opposite side of the car. The orange side marker light is the only visible light to the approaching car.
