hope someone can help as i am in a fix..... my k reg astra 1.4 is acting like it has no alternator, have fitted new alt and still the problem remains.
when driving along the electrics slowly die, starting with airbag light, then radio etc etc till finally car grinds to a halt showing no lights on dash , and no click from starter. has had two batterys so far. hhhhhhhheeeeeeeeelllllllpppppppp,

We experienced exactly the same with our M Reg Astra. Had a new alternator and several batteries fitted but fault remained - all were checked and came up as working correctly, but car still brokedown. Fed up we admitted defeat and took it into the garage for a computer diagnostics check.
I dont know if there is anything in this but they told us that because the ECU was not reset when the new alternator was fitted, it still read there was an alternator fault. As a result the charging system was not working correctly.
As soon as the ECU was reset by them, the car worked fine and continued to do so.

Have you actually bothered to check if it's charging, rather than just replace the battery and alternator?
I'd start by checking battery voltage witht he engine running, which should be about 13.5V - 14.5V. The start switching on loads and see if the voltage stays around this figure. It will drop a bit, but it should'nt drop below 12.2V.
If these values are not achieved check to make sure that all connections on the battery, starter motor and alternator are good. Use a voltmeter to measure volt-drop, which is the most accurate way of testing. Also make sure the charging light illuminates when you switch on the ignition, and goes out when you start the engine.
Post again if you still have no luck after checking all of this, and I'll take you to the next step.

ok battery is behaving normaly, also all connections appear sound. one thing , the alternator whines once engine is turned off. and the alt light on dash is in working order,do you think therew is anything in the "ecu" reset theory? if not what is the next level? oh and thanks for your reply leon

ok, battery reads, 12.05 unloaded and dips to 11.07 running, also alternator reads 0.20 hmmm, what now?

Does the alternator light illuminate with the other lights when you first turn on the ignition?
If not, then the earth strap connecting the alternator to the engine block has probably come adrift.
