Just seen an advert on the Tele (london south east area) for a new Car Mag called Test Drive
Anyone got any first hand reviews or comments?

They have e-mailed me with a tempting subscription offer but I'd like to see the finished article first.

Why not ask for a Test Drive? :)

Never heard of it.
will check the newsagents this lunch time!

Saw it in WH Smith today. Very glossy and content looked OK, but I only managed a quick browse througth. Strangely they had 'updates' on their long term test fleet. Odd considering it's issue 1.

Have just posted some of this on 'does anyone find car mags boring' and suggested people look here too.
I have a copy in front of me but was driving today so haven't done more than skim through so far. I'm on a train to London tomorrow so will let you know in the evening!
At first glance it looks more like What Car than Car - i.e. more or road tests than drooly articles about supercars. They say they want to involve readers more, and the editorial invites you to register. I see What Car have also started this as of today.
It's going to be £3.70 a copy but issue 1 is half price. Main test is Focus v Golf v Astra v Megane - the £16,000 diesel versions. Golf wins narrowly over Focus, then Megane, then Astra, but they only tested the 1.9 Golf and 1.7 Astra, presumably on price grounds. You can get a Focus 2.0 TDCi for this price apparently.

I heard it being advertised last night on Talksport, apparently the editor or some other chap is going to be on mike dickens show on talksport on friday lunchtime.

It would be very difficult to get a new magazine absolutely right first time - give the editorial team a chance to establish the magazine's content and overall direction.
|
I assume it's published by Dennis Publishing, the same as EVO. Certainly a flyer was in my Evo envelope when I got around to opening it. There's an offer in there to subscribe, getting the first three issues for £1. Presumably you then have to cancel the direct debit.
Don't think I'll bother.

It is a What Car? group publication-the layout, font etc is all What Car?, and the long term updates follow the current What Car? fleet.

What Car is published by Haymarket, Test Drive by Dennis. Long-term fleet looks different to me!
Having had a read of TD, I think it's quite good in the same way that What Car is - I doubt if you would need to buy both. Its tests are a little longer and more detailed, and there promises to be more reader involvement, which must be a good thing as long as readers are selected from a wide range of people.
I think it may struggle without more USPs over What Car, which is well established and does a good job in its chosen market.
