Does anyone have any experience with this engine?, particularly when fitted to an Astra?. We've been looking at old shape Astras and the low-spec CDTIs are going for about the same money as higher-spec DTIs. If there is no noticeable difference between the engines (MPG, Power, Noise etc) then choosing between the two would be much easier.
Also, does anyone know if adjustable steering columns were standard on newer Astras?. Our V reg does not have one yet a friend's W reg does. None of the cars I have seen for sale list it and checking Vauxhall's website only shows info on the new shape cars.

Not sure how new an Astra you're looking for, but my Dad's previous Astra Club on a 51 reg came with adjustable reach and rake as standard.

Only experience of the cdti I had was a hire car in France. It was Vauxhall Meriva with the 1.7cdti. I found it harsh (after driving Peugeot HDI's for example) and quite unrefined but plenty of torque & reasonable economy.
Sorry not a direct comparison.

We hired an Opel Astra with this engine on holiday in Austria on 2000 - possibly about the vintage you're looking at? I found it fairly unpleasant, mainly because the turbo boost came in all at once, instead of seamlessly as the best TDIs do. Before the boost came in it was very sluggish - alternatively very noisy if you kept the revs up when pulling away from scratch. Also I remember the brake pedal being several inches higher than the accelerator, which could have caused problems in an emergency.
I'm a fan of diesels but not this one.

Yes, I agree with Avant, so I won't bother typing it out!

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page - 98-04 Astra was sold with three 1.7 diesel engines - the old school TD, DTI and CDTI. Easy way to confuse customers but also to damage reputation of new engines because of old one's lack of refinement.
So, is the new CDTI that's "rough", "sluggish" and "noisy" as you described gentlemen?

Thanks for all the replies so far. As I understand it the CDTI wasn't available in the UK until 2003 and that no pre-03/53 cars advertised list it, seems to back that up. But thats not to say it wasn't available in France and Austria previously.
I didn't really want to start comparing diesels from different manufacturers as we are not considering other cars, only the Astra. I was just hoping to gain a bit of insight into the Vauhall offerings so that we could make a better choice.

Our car was hired this year in France & was new - so guess it was the new generation of engines. I was surprised at how unrefined it was for a new generation diesel - certainly not comparable to the Peugeot/Citroen HDI units. Never driven a new VAG derived diesel so can't compare.

I have run a 51 1.7DTi , for over 12 months , 50 plus mpg no problems. Its a bit noisy at tickover, and the gears/clutch are a bit heavy in stop/start traffic, but once moving its smooth, quiet and pulls well .Its steering adjusts for reach and rake , as it doe's on the wifes T reg 1.6LS.

I'm currently driving a hired 53 plate (23000 mile) Astravan 1.7CDTI in work and I love it. It's got the usual diesel clatter from cold, but once it's warmed up it sounds fine and goes like stink, for want of a better phrase!
I must admit that after driving a 1.7Di Combo a few weeks ago which had extremely annoying turbo-lag, I wasn't looking forward to another Vauxhall diesel, but this CDTI is a cracking motor.
The only thing I don't like is the complete lack of steering column adjustment.
Can't help on fuel consumption as I'm not paying for it I'm afraid.
