Any idea how much it cost to fit a new ECU to car? Have changed everything but this to eliminate hesitation. Is it dealer job?

It may not be ecu causing it.Have all the vaccum pipes been checked for possible splits as this will cause it.
I think new ecu is around £500. thats what my mate paid last year for one. and is M/D job
I would look at pipes first though..May be wrong but worth a look

These 'MEMS' ECU's (Rover design, Motorola manufacture) are not the most reliable of ECU's but can be swapped fairly easily and are not too dear if purchased 'reconditioned'.
Try BBA-Reman or ATP Electronics. ATP have a network of stockists that can test an ECU for you first. They charged £25 last time I had one tested, but it may have gone up a bit since then.

Very doubtful if it is the ECU.
It's a main dealer job anyway.
Software upgrades can (and should be) carried out at every service - this often has bug-fixes contained in it - ironing out flat spots etc.
Has this been done?

The ECU on this Rover will be locked to the imobiliser.
You cant just plug a new ECU onto this car, The ECU & imobiliser have to be coded to each other first & you will need a main dealer or someone with the correct software to do this.

Long gone are the days of plug and play.
Some of these ECU's are also locked to the VIN of the car, thus ruling out fitment of used units :(

I'm pretty sure that an ATP agent will be able to do this without great difficult - I don't think it'll be 'main dealer only'.
Look for a nearby ATP 'network 500' agent on the ATP electronics website and give them a call.

But it might not even be the ECU at fault - would the ATP ECU come with an up-to-date software installation?
Doubt it..
People (and garages!) are all too often too quick to blame the ECU in my experience.

I agree the ECU is probably not to blame (although the Motorola units manufactured for Rover are amongst the least reliable).
However, ATP should be able to test the original ECU for a very modest charge, and if defective they can supply a remanufactured unit at a reasonable price. It should have the latest software and they would be able to code it to the immobiliser.

Fair comment. test of ECU..Rover ECU has no memory. the test only states if problem with ECU. If nothing wrong with ECU. Still begs question what is wrong..Problem as I recall is ECU has no memory which means that even on diagnostics. The problem has to be there on Diagnostics test...It wont show up otherwise. From some I have seen there is no warning when they pack up

I must admit to having little experience of this problem with this car, but I would expect the ECU to be at the bottom of my check list for a hesitation problem. Surely there are more likely faults?

Basically I agree, hesitation and ECU don't seem to go together. However there have been some wierd and wonderful problems with Rover MEMs. For example, they had a problem with the engine 'hiccuping' when the cars were driven on a straight. smooth, road. It was traced to interference between the throttle pot loom and the crank pickup sensor loom. Basically, electrical noise from the crank sensor signal was being picked up by the throttle pot wiring and caused the ecu to think the throttle was being blipped.
Moreover, I think ATP have been doing a lot of business in rebuilt Rover ECU's.
As with all of these cases the car really needs to checked out by someone with a bit of experience.
