i put about 20 litres of uleaded into my escort van (diesel) dont laugh..it was nearly empty when i put it in it drove for a mile then started spluttering...i am only asking as the other thread about the same subject was mainly realising the mistake at the garage and then topping up with diesel...
any opinions on what i should/shouldnt do ad any rough cost ideas?
cheers

An old escort diesel? How big is the tank (ie how much diesel could you top it up with?)
If its an old one, I would be inclined to fill it to the top with diesel and run it. If I was being cautious I would syphon most of the unleaded out of tank and then fill it with diesel.
Old style diesel engines seem to be quite tolerant of a bit of petrol mixed in.

When I asked about driving a diesel in the cold to Russia, advice was to put about 10-15% petrol in to stop freezing etc. Try adding a bit of injector cleaner stuff as well.

The mechanical injectpor pump on the older vans reply on the diesel to lubricate the pump so too much petrol could damage the pump. I've read here on the forum to add a 1/2 litre of standard engine oil fill it with diesel and carry on. Regards Peter

I'd just add some oil and top off with diesel, you can use a the cheap vegetable oil, put about 10 litres in, then finish off with diesel.

I would let it idle as more fuel would be returned to the tank letting it mix better.

If it's the 1.8 NA Diesel then I found these virtually indistructable. On my K reg fiesta it was the best bit of the car. Will run on veg oil, diesel, lemon juice, whatever was in those military jerry cans I bought...

If you're near me, Beds/Herts, I've a pump set up, just to remove the contaminated fuel, without trying - you won't manage it - to syphon it out.

hey thanks for advice and offer of the use of the pump,(im in syockto up north)is there a device in the fuel tanl /pipe to stop me syphoning it out?
its a 1.8 m reg... i find all this advice cracking i really do
i think its a 60 litre tank,i put about 20-25 litres of unleaded in so if i cant get it out i will ad 5 litres of veg oil, then top up with diesel,... how long should i let it idle?just till it gets a wee bit smoother?
what do yous think?
cheers for the advice
jock...yeah the one walking everywhere lol

You won't get it out of the tank, through the fuel filler - it's awkward & takes forever.
I've made a pump, on a piece of ply & a length of fuel line.
Mail me if you want the details vansboy@onetel.com
It's a bit fiddly, but works!!
