Strange thing on our local coverage the other day... every time the red cars came in, there was an overhead camera shot showing the mechanics hard at work changing tyres, refuelling etc...
However, the CENTRE of the car, where the driver is, seemed to be 'fuzzed out' on the picture...
You know the technique - they use it on the news to cover important people's number plates, and criminals' faces.
I can only assume TWO things.
1) There is some form of advertising (Tobacco) on the area ahead of the driver, and this constitutes a part of the tobacco advertising ban in Italy?
2) There are exchanges of info in sign language between the drivers and crew, and this is a means of preventing other teams form 'reading' the game plan?
Any thoughts?

Interesting, my two theories were a bit different.
1) There was a problem with the camera, water on the lens or something
2) One of the Ferrari drivers had just robbed a corner shop, and the footage was going to be used on one of those cop shows, so they'd blanked out the face ready.

There's a great big "Marlboro" running down the top of the car. Maybe that's it? You can advertise smokes while driving, but not while stationary??? :)

The same question came up on an F1 newsgroup. It seems that the overhead shot was fine on Saturday (no rain) but after the deluge on Sunday, someone clearly forgot to give it a wipe.

Teams are very secretive about showing others what is inside the cockpits of their cars.
|
From the height of that camera, you'd just see the drivers' bodies and no "interesting" stuff. That's all between their hands and at their feet.
As I stated, I heard that the camera was working perfectly on Saturday.
|
Hmmm....
faulty camera, I'm not so sure. The fault was a very precise fuzzy area that just happened to cover the cockpit area.
I think advertesing rules had something to do with it.

Yes i think this is the real reason, one of the Ferrari mechanics must have got a ladder and done the business.. remember a few races back in qualifying when David Coulthard sat in the cockpit on the back of a lorry after stopping on the circuit to prevent anyone seeing inside, oh how silly he looked.

Rain water on lens, no brainer!
|
Wouldn't water evapourate over 2 hours?
Camera lense was upside down so why did water not drip off?
In the cloak and dagger world of F1 and in particular Ferrari anything is possible..
|
I doubt if you could see anything of note inside the cockpit of an F1 car with the driver on board. They even have to remove the steering wheel so he can get in and out. The mark looked like a smear after someone had wiped the rain from the camera lens.
Great race, though. Looked for a while like JB was going to grab it.

I think it was a smear on the lens. If you want to see inside the cockpit, there was (maybe still is) a full-size "replica" of the F2003 GA in the Shell Building in London - had a week off in August and went up to London; was surprised to see this red F1 Ferrari in their building but the ladies on reception had no problem with people wandering in off the street and taking photos, so long as they didn't touch the car!
