What brand of chip was it?
I\'m interested.

Would be interested to know what fuel consumption you get by topping the tank.
It could be your new chip is giving misleading data to your fuel consumption puter.
|
DL - I had my previous car chipped by Simon, and it was a chip from a company called upsolute (www.upsolute.com).
Cheers, DB

Interested to know if it adversely affects the manufacturers warranty?. Also wondering how much extra may typically be added to the insurance premium.
Thanks
Baz

Not sure about the warranty but the chip is un-detectable by VW so nobody will ever no. your car could be chipped when you bought it if it was second hand and you would never no. Anyway you can increase the BHP by changing the exhaust & air filter on most cars but do you ever tell your insurance company? I have been told that some dealers chip there demo's (to increase there sales) anyway so how naughty is that, you drive the demo and it goes like hell then you buy the car and it chuggs along!! & of course THEY always tell you dont they.......

Interesting stuff indeed! I have an Octavia 110Tdi which goes very well indeed, and have read a fair bit on "chipping" in the likes of "Diesel Car" magazine. I'm aware that some manufacturers (inc Toyota) I believe, offer a chip upgrade as an option. Has the car lost any flexibility at low speeds? Incidentally, my TDI is averaging about 55 mpg, I must have a lighter right foot than yours!
|
Hi,
No loss of flexibility at all infact it has increased (less gear changing at low revs/speeds) I would say by about 20% my mpg is based on an average speed of 65mph and I do drive it hard with a heavy foot! also she is 5 yrs old with 120,000 on the clock! By the way you have the same engine as me
Hope this helps

Hi - I\'ve had 2 Octavia 110 BHPs chipped and both gave the \"wow\" factor. Got the first chip back (still have it if anyone interested - at a discount of course - self fit only though)- the second I left on so someone now has the benefit for free. I told my insurer and they added about £30 pa, to go from 110 to 130 bhp. Now looking for a system that is as good but can be carried forward to a new car. Now have the Fabia 1.9 TDI PD 100).

"but the chip is un-detectable by VW so nobody will ever no"
Sorry me ole fruit - untrue. ANY change to a chip changes what is called the "check sum". If VW cared to explore deeper into their diagnostic system they would see the checksum for the version number was wrong.
However having said that the chances of them delving that far is pretty remote!

Hi,
Yes it was simon who did mine here are his details:
Tel: 01246 411021
Mobile: 07957 240822
Pls mention me if you ring him
Its not a particular chip type he re-programmes a new chip with new software and then fits it into your ECU. Fuel econ is correct as the fuel gauge is still on Half! I always fill to top of the tank each time to check mpg. Anyway the idea is to increase the torque so that overtaking and pulling away is smoother & more responsive the extra fuel econ is a bonus as far as I am concerned.

This raises the question of how on board mpg indicators calculate the figures.
My belief (based on older cars) is that it measures the depression in the inlet manifold and then computes mpg based on the injection algorithm held in the ECU. There is no direct measurement of the volume of fuel used.
If you changed the rate at which at which the fuel is injected for a given airflow (the basis of rechipping) the calculations and hence the display will then always be incorrect.
With more modern vehicles with fully integrated ECU and mpg display technology it maybe more sophisticated in that it could measure fuel pressure, injection rate/time and hence give an accurate figure even when rechipped.
Can some one enlighten me please.
The only way to get accurate figures (as well discussed on this site previously) is by brim to brim refilling over a long period of time. Manufacturers displays seem rather optimistic in many cases.

P TDI Man,
By any chance is your car white? I heard that they were the quicker ones off the production line, something to do with German police forces ....
Have you had the car on the rolling road?
Could be interesting!!

Hi,
Well guess what you are right my car is white! and a german import too first reg in germany feb 1999, are you saying that I may have a more refined car to begin with? I would not no myself as this is my first VW. Any more info would be of most interest..
Thanks

Simon has Chipped 2 of my vans a merc V220Cdi and a VW caravelle TDI with excellent results. My insurer Liverpool Victoria do not charge any extra for the modification.

Well, my C5 HDI (smooth as a petrol) still underreads by 2mpg even when chipped. I guess that proves your theory.

Sounds like I'll have to search out this Simon once I've paid for my laser printer in October (Interest Free Credit comes to an end, pay it off then...)

Most German police cars are green;fuel consumption is checked by recording the time the injectors are open(modern diesels are constant flow not by injector pump).
|
Remember the extra stress you are putting on the drive train etc, 5 speed Passat 130's have the max torque restricted compared to the 6 speed due to concerns over the gearbox (310nm v 320nm). That being said I doubt a chipped 110 is as torquey as a 130 PD.

Brim to brim filling seems to be ok except in my case tesco petrol gives me more miles per gallon.Maybe they have a better filling to the brim system.

Hi,
There's one thing I don't understand that maybe someone can explain to me. Why is it that the car manufacturers themselves don't fit these kits from new. Essentially, as I understand it, the kits are remapped fuelling profiles, which is software and would cost nothing to the manufacturer. If a one-man outfit can transform a car why don't the manufacturers do so. Surely more power, better mpg and smoother running can only sell more cars.
I always believe you don't get anything for nothing, so what's the downside ?
|
Some companies do just that. Same engine, different chip, higher price as a "sports" model.
|
Ooooh yes!
Had my TDi chipped on Friday and it's great!
Low down pull is far better than before, whilst response in 4th gear is fantastic.
Makes my commute all the more pleasurable!

Emmissions?
|
I've previously had a 406HDi that was chipped by Simon. Went through its MOT with no problems with emmissions. In fact, the tester said it was one of the lowest he's seen.
An Italian Tune Up probably helped though.

Hi DB,
The MOT emmisions test is there just to catch obvious faults. You need to make drastic adjustments to an engine in tip top condition to get it to fail the MOT.
I meant the total emissions - as quoted for tax purposes and the like. I was speaking with an engineer who has just finished three year's research on Ford diesels - he told me that the line between having lots of NOx and lots of particulate emmissions is particularly difficult to get right.
