I remember reading an article a couple of years back in the Times motoring section, about courses to teach safe, fast driving of high performance cars which is donein your own car, on roads not track.
Does anyone know who this was, or can anyone recommend something similar?
Thanks!

I have such a certificate gained with the Paul Ripley School based in Leeds.
It was conducted at Elvington airdrome a few miles south of Leeds, but whether this is a regular venue I don't know as it was privately arranged.
Paul used to appear on a TV car show - I think it was transmitted on Channel 4 at the time - demonstrating various driving techniques.

PS
Apart from police officers who undergo such training, I would be surprised if any such courses were arranged for public roads rather than on tracks or airfields.

I think I might have read somewhere that you could pay the police to teach you, but I might be completely wrong.
Have you tried going down to the local police station and finding an officer who's had driver training? Perhaps he (or she) could be persuaded to give you a private lesson.

When I worked for a certain motor industry employer in the late 1980's I was sent on a course run by West Midlands Police. We went on ordinary roads and motorways etc. Don't think they run them any more though...

I always understood Yorkshire folk to be a canny lot, yet no one has spotted that I somehow managed to move the massive Elvington runway (it's around two miles long) somewhat further west than its geographical position south of York and the A64...:-)
