Never buy a Mk 3 Fiesta - fiestaman
After a year of joy free motoring my ford fiesta L reg has just been diagnosed with terminal rust at it's MOT. I am thinking of either scraping it, or trying to sell it for parts. I have been warned that people buying a car for £50 may not register it correctly, and that I might be liable for fines incured by them. What is the best way of disposing of this car?
Also, has anyone had a good experience with any hatchback under £1000? If so, what?
Thanks for everyone's help in delaying the death of my car,
Sam

If you are not expecting any cash for it. Tell your local council its scrap and would like it removed. they normaly remove fairly quickly.

If you're selling it onto someone else:-
There's a tear off slip at the bottom of your log book that you must fill in with the new owners details and then you must return it to the DVLA at Swansea. Shortly afterwards you'll get a reply thanking you for informing them that you are no longer the legal owner of said vehicle and won't be liable for any parking tickets, speeding fines, etc.

If you decide to scrap it:-
Fill in the other part of the log book and return it to the DVLA.

What happens if you sell it to someone and fill in the V5, but they give you a false name/address? And then they go off and get 100 speeding tickets, aren't I then responsible?

Shouldn't matter, providing you've informed the DVLA you're no longer the owner of the car.

I'm afraid for cars under £1000 there's no guaranteed (sp?) good buy.

I was fairly lucky as I know someone at a Ford Dealers who sold me a K-Reg Corsa (not nice cars, but it will still cruise at 70-80 and return reasonable MPG) for trade price. It's done 10k miles by me (113k total). I was similarly thinking of replacing it but just spend £110 on Distributor, Plugs + Labour to get it to run, so I'll have to hang on a couple of months.

There may be one or two dealers in your area which specialise in buying car from auction for buttons putting them through a basic service and MOT and selling them for under a grand.

Basically, anything under a grand you don't know how long it is going to last, for example a friend got given an H reg 1.0l Micra with 45k on the clock that had been completely rebuilt. I don't think he got more than 10k miles but he did insist on trying to drive it at 90+ on dual carriageways / motorways.

The way to look at it is if you get 6 months you've had your money's worth. Try and buy something with as long a MOT as possible and try to stick to the more popular makes such as Ford, Vauxhall which tend to have cheaper parts.

After change of circumstances, from job to student i have gone from leon cupra to mk2 astra. Managed to buy an astra with 8 months mot and tax for 200 quid. ok its not pretty but if your prepared to do the servicing yourself you should have a few months cheap motoring. Mine passed its mot last week with no probs.....that cupra seems a long distant memory!!! I bought it off ebay btw.

If you decide to scrap the car it's worth bearing in mind that good second OHV engines for these are like gold dust. Most Fiestas and Escorts of around this year in scrapyards have knackered engines.

You may get more by selling the engine alone if it's good, so make sure you're happy with the price the scrap dealer offers you before parting with it.

re the original post. I've owned a few Fiestas and it may be worth querying what 'terminal rust' means. It generally means the garage thinks its not worth paying for the welding repairs because they will cost as much as the vehicle is worth. But if you've got a car that is mechanically sound and runs well it can still be a better solution to do the welding rather than have all the risk and hassle of buying another old car which may well present different problems. You can get an awful lot of welding done for say £100-150.

From the number of Peugeot problems on the forum at the moment it is not a Fiesta that I would avoid!
