Nice to see that with all recent talk of oil production problems, the Chinese economy draining our reserves faster than predicted, and ultimately, and end to it all, we're being nice and sensible with what we use it for.

To quote the paragraph in particular that amazed me:

Bottled Water (for pets)
No parched pooch should be without it, according to inventor Bill Fels. Launched last year in the United States - which, unsurprisingly leads the world in the pet pampering stakes - Petrefresh is a bottled water specially formulated for dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, iguanas, pot-bellied pigs and even fish. Sold in regular two-litre bottles for $2.29 (£1.25) each, the mountain-spring water is processed using ultraviolet light and ozone, but unlike human bottled water is not "sediment filtered". Rhonda Stoner, who markets the product, says it's "not a luxury item"

Of course this water won't come in oil derived plastic bottles, or be transported in oil burning vehicles, will it?!

What a shameful waste of resources, and I don't care it it is a free market for anyone to exploit. I still don't like abuse of that privilege.

I'm afraid that you have to put pets into that category. Unless your terrier catches foxes, or your German Shepherd catches burglars, your dog (hamster/goldfish) is a complete waste of natural resources. As is that second pair of shoes in your wardrobe. Let alone the tenth, eleventh and twelfth.

Your beloved motorsport does nothing for anybody. A 400bhp motorbike???? 400??? What a waste of oil.

Err, no (though I wish!)
400 bhp per tonne, an easy 50 mpg, and the bike gets used instead of the car at every realistic opportunity.

I thought though that I had been careful to stop short of 'eco warrior' mode (Heavens, I didn't even mention Chelsea Tractors! ;-) and instead simply highlighted something that strikes me, and my opinions, as pointless.

You could get about just as well on a 100cc scooter... And a 2.4litre engine in a V70 - outrageous. Why not run a diesel.

And motorsport? Compared to cricket?

Let the poor pampered pooches have their bottled water!

Okay, a deal: The pooches get their water if you'll come and hunt the wretched cats that mess in my garden!

Said pooch may be willing to do that for you.

Seriously, I agree it's a shameful waste of resources. But then so is having pets. Or 2 cars. etc. etc.

We have a large van in our immediate area that will come to your home then shower, wash, dry and do heavens knows what to your pet in said van.

......but you see 100cc isn\'t any fun, makes you look like a prat as well, whereas a big hairy-bottomed motorbike will stop the adrenalin from congealing and turning you into a PC eco-drone just as the greenies would like to see. I.e. everybody living in huts made out of recyclable straw, rubbing 2 pieces of wood together to start fires, riding donkeys to work and wearing dead animals. Having passed manadtory government courses in tree-hugging and how use spinning wheels, not mention that awful word \"parenting\".

As for pets I personally don\'t care for them, although I do have some tropical love-birds (of the feathered variety let me say at once), but remember that for old people ( sorry can\'t say that, for \"seniors\") and people living alone (sorry can\'t say that either, \"singles\") a pet can provide affectionate company and a relationship of sorts. I believe there are cases where keeping pets has helped people who are sick as well.

As for giving them special water in plastic bottles that\'s just probably another example of some marketing pimples\' meeting after an overly indulgent Friday lunch. What a lot of BS.

I'm not sure that the pets will feel the same way as the inventor. In my experience, it doesn't matter what you give them, they will always prefer to drink from a muddy puddle, the dripping tap in the bath, or the loo. Quite heartening, really (although a bit tough on the hamsters, who can't exercise quite so much free will).

Ecologically speaking, I don't suppose a few extra plastic bottles will make a huge difference, although one beneficial side effect of the next oil crisis might be a return to glass bottles and deposits!

Well, my Mrs. came back from the DIY shop with a tin of (or a rather a plastic of) emulsion paint for decorating. But she also spent £2.40 on a sachet of Dulux PAINT WIPES!!! Whatever next! A wet rag will do the trick just as well for emulsion, or a rag and a dab of Polyclens for gloss. Personally, I try not to spill, drip or smudge the paint in the first place.

Cheers, Sofa Spud

When Lady Stripey does something like that, there is only one thing to say. "Yes, dear".
