I'm considering importing a classic car from Germany, it will be pre-1963 so I guess the registration allocated will take the form of XYZ 123.
I'd quite like a specific first 3 letters (OFP), but because the letters haven't run that far yet can I register the car at a certain registration office and get _FP 123 ? How do I find out where the FP registration office is located?
As it's not ab obvious set of initials a search on the "cherished plates" type places comes back with nothing. As I'm going to pay to register it anyway, I think I might as well get part of the letters in my normal registration fee.
Any help would be gratefully received.

use the "plate finder"--------------->
there are quite a few "FP`s" available.

There are, but they're all for post 1963 vehicles, and you can't put a plate on which is newer than the car (or we'd all save lots of money and buy new plates for our 3-year old cars!)
Any plate which is "pre-reg" tends to be valued higher anyway, and I'd rather get almost what I want for the normal £50 fee than pay £500++

hi garethj,
i thought they were a bit dear too! :-)
however according to google, the registration area for the letters FP is/was, rutland c.c (in the 60`s)

You're right billy, it now looks like Nottingham office issues _FP registrations. Only 80 miles away from me!
Looks like a phone call to them and see if they can understand what I'm blithering on about. Hmmmm, an unusual request into a government office.... there's a fair chance they'll put the phone down on me.
Anyone done this before?

I know nothing about this - didn't even know they still issued six-digit plates.
But if you manage to get one issued with letters you want, can you then sell it on? Could you, for example, get one with my initials, sell it to me, and re-register it again with your initials?
Can you then get six digit plates to order for £50 each?

Let me know if you can. I may have an order for you!

I think you can only get a 6 digit plate if the car is pre 1963 (A registration)

Yes, but if you have one of these, can you ask for a specific 6 digit plate, transfer it away, and ask for another one?
If so then there could be a tidy trade!

I seem to recall that not long ago a poster on here stated that certain substitute plates were non-transferable.
|
Ah.
I thought it seemed too easy.
|
Certainly some plates are non-transferable - including the one on my car now, which bears the initials of the original owner. I don't know why the DVLA deemed that it can't be transferred, though. Perhaps because the car was not new (three years old) when first registered...
