Not sure if this should go in Technical section.
My S80 has been idling lumpily for about a month. My local Volvo specialist didn't even look at it; just said it was part that cost £500 to replace. Anyway, yesterday it got really bad and the Engine management system light came on. So I took it to a diagnostic place, who found some fault codes which made sense.
However, as soon as he read them, the fault disappeared. The warning light went out, the idle returned to steady and the emmissions is spot on.
Why then and not before?

Are you sure he merely read the codes? As 90% of ignition faults are caused by damp, dirty or poor connections, or poor earths, maybe he just waggled some wires and then cancelled the codes?
|
Cliff - he didn;t even raise the bonnet!

When the EML came on a couple of days after I had my Honda serviced and it was running very lumpy ,I took it to the local agent very early one morning to complain. As no mechanics were about the service manager himself ( besuited) came out with a laptop , plugged it in under the dash and within a couple of minutes had adjusted the settings so the usual sewing machine tickover was restored.
He did not go near the engine.

Does anyone know how to do this in reverse?
i.e. plug a laptop into a smooth running car and make the laptop learn from the car?
I'll post this if I can do it in time before it cra

LOL!
When you realise how many sensors and other electronics are under the bonnet and elsewhere it is a great surprise that cars are as reliable as they are. Or were they better in the late 1980s. I remember reading somewhere that the best Honda ever made was the Accord from between 1988 and 1992 because the electronics were simple.
If aeroplanes faulted as often as cars they would crashing into the ground every week.

I'm not sure that each individual electrical system on an aircraft is more reliable than a cars equivalent, but the plane has far more redundancies and back up systems.

After watching the recent series on Channel 5 about aircraft disasters, I wouldn't be so sure.
