Ferrarri; 2nd-hand 2+ 2 for retirement - rory
Morning all. Thinking of the future and retirement in a few years, I won't be doing huge mileages any more and am thinking how nice it would be to have something brutal, fun and classic for my 8-9000 miles a year. It seems nearly all second-hand Ferraris are very expensive ( ie more than £25K )and the more recent ones need cambelt circa 12K miles.

That said, there apprear to be a couple of exceptions: Mondial and - although getting on a bit - the 400/400i. Both of those seem excellent sized, and would probably suit my needs, but more importantly, their prices look more reasonable. Fixed-cost Ferrarri servicing doesn't look tooooooo horrendous, either.

I'd be very grateful for your views on anything relevant to this. For example, are they priced lower because the market doesn't like oldish ( 1970's - 1980') 2+2s Ferraris ?

IIRC the Modial was designed by Bertone and not Pininfarina, so was the runt of the litter design wise. Not loved, although mechanicals same as the 308/328 of same era. Problem was the mechanicals were a bit sluggish. Not as fast as earlier cars becuase of first attempt at emmission controls.

The 400(i) was a fine car but more of a 2-door saloon so also unloved except by older men. I was 15 when I first saw one and wanted it, so what did that make me? I think the 400 rusted, but i suspect thet if you found one now, it would have been fettled to keep it whole. Likely to be expensive to run if things break though.

Evo Magazine used to do a series on owning various desirable used cars telling you the good and bad things and contact names for specialists. I'm pretty sure Mondials got an article and I know the 348 and 456 did.

Evo have a service where you can order back-numbers although some have sold out.
